This website seems to be full of information about this particular topic, so maybe you guys can help them out...
From the 8-14-07 Imperial Valley Press: The Calexico Arts Commission will be hosting a 1950s Rock ’n’ Roll dance in tribute to Calexico’s favorite hang out during the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, Owens Drive-In.We need the community’s help in solving these historic research problems. We need people that visited Owens on a regular basis. We need someone who can describe the menu or better yet provide us with one. We need people (sweethearts or students) who hung out there, for interviews on Owens. Also, we need anyone who knew Lola, the sexy waitress at Owens. If there is someone that can provide us with the above information please contact Bill Hodge at 562-1113 or Leticia Castro at 562-9600. This event will take place on Oct. 27 at the Calexico Elks Lodge. |

Maybe you should hit up some of Mr. Washam's relatives if they're still around. I remember the taquitos w/ a grip of meat in them. They had some open faced chili burgers. All there burgers had that signature finely trimmed lettuce that didn't overwhelm you with this big chunk of lettuce in your mouth. And as a kid back then you can't forget that huge glass "dome" with the cakes and donuts..... |

Yeah, I think Mark Washam still lives there in the valley. I'd heard that he was selling Owens Burgers for awhile at the El Centro Swap meet on Dogwood road but I never made it over there.
My "must order" menu item was the Machaca burritos. They had this wonderful tasting, juicy red sauce that I always managed to drip all over the front of my shirt. God that was good! |

Why did Owen's close down?
I have absolutely no recollection about this place. |

I think that it closed down from a combination of things - McDonald's came to town and Mr. Washam probably grew weary of running the place.
Does anyone know "when" it closed down? |

1981- Washam sold to 7-11 and auto parts store. Building was relocated to Hwy 98 for many yrs. by the railroad tracks and sat empty.
Owen Smith was original owner- The famed Pacheco Bros lived across the street and know everything.
The food was great because everything was fresh. |

Was this building the one that was north-west of the tracks on 98? It later was part of the Sto. Tomas and sold telas and patches? |

Nope. The building was burnt down as part of a drill the Fire Department held. I remember the IV Press covered it. Sure miss those freshly made taquitos in chile and avocado sauce. |

That sucks. I wonder if the building was unique in any way.
What also sucks is how that old Spanish home near Mains School (on Highway 9 was demolished to make room for apartments. That house was nice, but I'm sure it had some problems. Someone with the money could have made that their very fine residence.
Not much is preserved around here, I guess. |
