Just saw this on the Digg front page:

http://digg.com/business_finance/Bill_Gates_no_longer_world_s_richest_man

Seemed pretty interesting to me, even though it doesn't have any world-shattering complications attached with it.

Interesting how many of the internationally successful Mexicans have non-Latino names...

Carlos Slim is Lebanese, just as is Salma Hayek.

Hank, Fox, Jones, and so on.

I had been noticing the same things.

Up at school there was this guy that ran his own little electronics shop named Eid. He was Arabic so when I went in there one day to ask for a part me and buddy needed to work on a little hacking experiment of ours and I told him my name he asked if I was Arabic too.

When I told him I was Mexican, he told me that a lot of Arabic people moved to Mexico and opened up businesses there (I don't know at what specific time period he was talking about here, the interesting part was to hear about it).

The thing for me is that I always seemed to see Mexico as a homogeneous "brown" country, but Mexico is also a country of immigrants, just like the US. From the Arabs to the Mennonites to the large Asian population in Mexicali, a whole lot of people have moved to Mexico from other countries.

One easy example for me is my neighbor a few fields over who is the chef over at the Fortune House in El Centro. He's Chinese but he's from the other side of the border originally.

Just wanted to throw that out into the air, but I do get your point that these people with more European backgrounds (judging from their last names) seem to wield the most power.

Wow, Mexico's poverty gap just turned into the Mariana trench! Now that intro to the article below is a scary statement.

On a related note, I read Slim has a Rodin collection. Were these the same pieces that were in exhibition in Mexicali?

Telmex tycoon Carlos Slim Helù controls Mexico's local phone service, long distance, and Net access, not to mention half of the nation's stock market. Now he's set his sights north of the border [...] Not a day goes by without almost every Mexican consumer paying tribute to Carlos Slim Helù

I read this almost 6-year-old article over lunch and I must say it's quite insightful as to how ruthless Carlos Slim is/was. He clearly fed off Mexico's poor to build his empire.

He's only now the richest man in the world thanks to Billy Bob Gates donating his cash to charity.

Is Telmex still the monopoly in Mexico? Did Vicente Fox put a stop to any of this?

Someone commented that a Ma Bell type of split-up in Mexico would strip him of some power. He just needs to be like Gates and give some loot to stopping poverty in the region.

That would make sense why Verizon lost its contract with Mexican cellular service. Verizon used to have a North American Plan that allowed US callers to call Mexico/Canada with their minute allowance. That plan has been canceled and roaming fees in Mexico were increased to .99 c p/m and .50 c for text.

Lesson number one: Don't underestimate the other guy's greed!
