Mexico debuts tonight at 6 PM against Cuba in Hugo's first official FIFA game.
USA won their first game (1-0) versus Guatemala.
I think Canada won too, but Canada SUCKS!

| Ill root for Tri unless they play the USA. But if they match-up that would be insane. It means more than the game they played in Dago? Right? |

USA and MEX could meet in the final, but after this Sunday loss against Honduras, there's a chance Mexico won't advance if they blow it against Panama. |

Has anyone seen the Seleccion?
I haven't. Disastrous start under Hugo. I know Hugo needs time, but boy did they looked terrible against Honduras. Yikes.
Schemes and players can be fixed, but the most disheartening aspect of Hugo is his lack of killer instinct. He puts his tail in between in his legs and ducks. Crap. Against Cuba, he sub'd C.Salcido which showed he was content with the score and rather not lose. He played not to win, but not to lose. In that game the Seleccion was able to win the game.
But against Honduras that same approach cost him the game. Up 1-0 Hugo maid no adjustments after C.Blanco got thrown on. He waited to adjust his team. Unless he's a firm believer in the Zen approach, which I doubt, he needs to be a proactive DT. He waited and waited and when he did make a move, he solidified his defense. Then after the game was tied at 1-1 he made another move to solidify his midfield. He played not to lose, and he lost.
So who cares if you're down one player, you can still attack instead of retreating into your net and expect to stop all their shots. Hugo looked weak. He stopped playing to win just because he lost a man. I know, he sub'd in Fonseca at the end, but that was not a move to attack, just a move to relieve O.Bravo.
And while some of the blame has to go to the players like C.Salcido, Hugo needs to take all the blame. First, C.Salcido called out his DT for not playing him in the Cuba game (all 5 minutes), but wasn't he the one who gave up the last goal? Second, Hugo has looked for excuses: the grass, the ref, Blanco, but needs to address his in-game deficiencies.
If they don't win today, he needs to be let go. Not because he lost a tournament, but because he played scared. |

I was trying to educate myself on this tournament. There doesn't seem to be a lot of good information out there for your average Jose.
How often does this tournament take place?
What is the significance of the tournament?
I know it's pretty important, because it has the "Gold" in the name, but is it really? Or is this one of those, "Let's not send our best guys out there because we don't want them to get hurt" kind of thing? |

The Seleccion is definitely not playing it's best futbol, but at least Mexico toughen a win out. Winning ugly sometimes builds character and more importantly it breeds confidence.
R.Osorio is damn good. He was the only bright figure in the first half and part of the second. Then C.Salcido took over the game. Yes he did score the goal, but he finally started the defense that made him Mexico's best player.
While I liked the original switch of A.Guardado and A.Medina to throw off the Panamanian strategy, Hugo took more than 13 minutes to realize it was a bad move. Plus, he took forever to take out A.Medina. He might play good in Mexico, but he has struggle sporting 'la verde.'
Hugo has to come up with a way to free up A.Guardado since every team is gearing solely to stop him right now. You stop A.Guardado and you stop any consistent Mexican attack.
It's going to be weird seeing the Costa Rica team playing without P.Wanchope. |

The winner of this Gold Cup (Copa de Oro) competes in the Confederations Cup.
