This was the top story on Univision on Friday, reporters saying 101 students got kicked out of school for not providing proof of residency. They were live from Calexico interviewing CUSD administrators.

One of those students, Jorge Fuentes, a U.S. citizen and his mother a U.S. citizen couldn't provide proof of residency because they live with her parents, so there wasn't anything to show she owned a home.

It will only be a matter of time until some civil union shows up to sue the district and then they will not have enough in payroll to pay their teachers. Students enrolled at CUSD bring in state money to keep the system rolling.

Oh by the way, 98 of the 101 students went back to school. Just interesting topic of discussion that us Calecianos might want to get into since this story is making national news.

I read the article in the IVP, but what it lacked was an explanation as to why the family didn't just go with the notarized letter. It was quickly mentioned, but then it went on to why the man wouldn't put his daughter's name on any bills.

AFAIK, every student is required to show proof of residence and if that's not available, a notarized letter will do.

Notarized letter would of meant end of story, which doesn't make for interesting news.

Was there a follow-up on the 98.98% return rate for these students? I'm not implying the media is trying to make these families appear to be criminals, but how about a happy ending here?

Alvarez was quoted by the IVPress saying, “We’ve had a number of citizens in our community, taxpayers in our community, who continue to articulate to us that they want to make sure our students live here in Calexico and not across the border,” he said. “This is not something that is not out of the ordinary; we’ve asked them to prove that they live here, plain and simple.”

Yeah right. Last year CHS implemented a strong no Mexicans allowed policy, but those views quickly changed when enrollment significantly dropped. Instead of attending CHS many kids enrolled in El Centro that left people at the district office struggling to come with new ideas.

Cause if don't make dollars, it don't make sense...

The conflict here rises in that U.S. citizen students are being kicked out and that itself can stir up controversy in Calexico Unified's policy implementation. They have got to get it right at least, whether it be notarized letter, utility bills, or whatever. La estan cagando.

Why only limit it to U.S. citizens and not include Mexican nationals?

CUSD denied education to 101 students. Nice.

True. It would be very interesting to look into precedents as they relate to this type of case.

No controversy. I guess people at the district are smarter then they look. Still, why didn't the CUSD kick these students out during STAR testing or other state testing week?

Oh noes...

They also kicked out an active in Iraq US soldier's daughter from Kiki Camarena Jr. High.

The terrorists have won... again.

Check out one of the most hilarious quotes I've read in a long time from a Q&A by the IVP regarding this topic.

"They are using people’s addresses when they don’t even know the people. Sometimes I get mail and phone calls (from Calexico schools) for students that I don’t even know. And I know they are people from Mexicali ’cause they have long names. The schools are paying too much attention to them (those from Mexicali) with helping them to speak English and not enough on the students that live here."

Steven Martinez, 28, of Roosevelt Street

Mexicans in Calexico schools? It’s no secret

I think we should kick some more students from Mexicali (or as they are also know, "chicalones") out of our schools, so that people like Steven Martinez can go back to school and learn how to speak.
