I had to call for an ambulance about a week ago for my severily ill uncle and I was told that the only ambulance in Calexico was out in El Centro. We waited for some time which seemed like an eternity specially when someone you love is layed out not being able to breathe. I was pretty impressed by the care he got while the paramedics were at our house, but I thought that after the death of Mr. Mendez they had added more ambulances in Calexico. I also understand by what I read here that the fire department had an ambulance donated. While I asked what happened to the other ambulances, the fire guys were pretty professional and did not want to disclose what is wrong with the ambulance situation. I Drove past the station in front of the park while on my way to the hospital and I made a point to note that there were at least three other ambulances sitting there at the fire station. If they have decided to cut services on the citizens, wouldn't that be wrong? it be like the city all of a sudden deciding not to provide you with water or sewer services!! We are talking about people not pot holes and I want to know what is the deal here? do we have people here that can answer that question? Who was the IDIOT who made the decision of cutting such a vital service without asking us the citizens if we needed or not? Where is the hospital they promissed? (it will never happen) I think that if our local government decided to increase the services to us, then there must have been a need, right? So what has changed since Mr. Mendez died? why dont we need anymore ambulances? Please someone give me an answer.

While TheCitizen expects answers that more likely than not will arrive too late, I proposed solutions to this ongoing outcry.
1. Each parent should be trained in CPR.
2. Each family should own a defribilator. Is $1000 worth the life of a loved one?
3. CPD, CFD should carry defribilators.
4. Calexico residents should step away from 'manteca' Rex and eat a fruit. |

You are right that they should cut down on the manteca, but if there was three more ambulances then why weren't they used?
Oh sure, but when someone is stopped, there's like five cops in the "crime scene". |

Sorry to hear about this mishap and hopefully your uncle made it through just fine.
The city/CFD must have had a good reason as to why they didn't deploy their available ambulances in time. Hopefully someone can explain or blow the whistle.
Chifla puto!
What is the story behind "Mendez." I remember hearing an ex-council candidate bring this up to the city council a while back, but I was clueless about this specific ambulance absence. Was he part of the elite or something? |

| It seems that for many years Calexico has had issues with ambulances and medical services and no one has provided a solution to it, just promises. Since I can remember every candidate for the City Council has made it an important part of his/her platform, but no one has ever produced. Something must be done, either have the City buy more ambulances to serve our wonderful city or hire an outside company that will provide the service that we need. Enough is enough!!! |

| Has anyone ever done a factual study for the demand of emergency services in the city of Calexico? I hear a lot of opinions on this subject but I do know that other municipalities-outsource ambulance services for a lower cost but in Calexico- the emergency services are under the taxpayers payroll plus benefits. I guess the fire department is our doctors on wheels given that we have no real medical center or doctors in the community except for a couple who have really long waits. Thank goodness for our proximity to Mexicali-good doctors, fast service and low fees. |

| It's not just Calexico, the Hospitals (and most doctors) in the valley suck...They should get tested right now to see if they really know what they're doing, it seems to me that they just take guesses...usually when you go to the hospital in el centro, if they can't figure out what's wrong with you, they'll say "ohh tienes virus, aqui esta un Tylenol" |

| About outsourcing for medical services, don't both El Centro and Brawley outsource to an outside company, who have to come and bail us out when we our City services are tied up, as they are with any city the size of Calexico. It is time that we do something. But what can be done, any ideas? |

You nailed it!
Most cities throughout the world hire private companies to provide ambulance services to them. Actually There is only a slim number of public ambulance and hospital services thoughout the country. Instead of paying a bunch of taxes for a couple of people to do nothing at the Heffernan board, we could use that money to hire more personnel for the ambulances that calexico currently has...
But leave it to those people who benefit from ripping the city off, to derail any potential advance in public safety. |
