On the City of Calexico Home Page there is a very interesting flyer announcing a Calexico planning symposium.
Sample Topics to be discussed:
• Commercial Potential
• Industrial Locations
• New Mixed Use Applications Downtown
• Housing & Parks How do they mix?
• Downtown Revitalization
• Growth Opportunities
• City Services to the Developer
Personally I am very exited to see some sort of planning considerations that don’t involve mindless expansion of houses with rotting green reservoirs, with arbitrary placed commercial zones between them. This past Christmas was a horrible season for local businesses, especially those located downtown. Money, instead of community decay, inevitably caused leaders to ask “What can be done to improve downtown, and for that matter, Calexico?” For years now Calexico has been neglecting its community for profit. Maybe this produced a housing boom and rose the population of Calexico, but the social implications to such growth were “surprisingly” unanticipated by our “highly educated” representatives. The meeting is a great opportunity for those concerned citizens to express their views of Calexico’s current and future development.
We can all agree Calexico is a nice city with great potential, but the way in which we steer its present can greatly affect its future. What do you think can be done to improve Calexico’s infrastructure? Does it really need any improvement?
My two cents:
Close downtown roadways to make it more pedestrian friendly. The development of downtown should focus on bringing Calexico residents back through the use of restaurants and hang-out bars, instead of simply supporting Mexicali residents. |
