A fellow in Brawley sent a letter to the IVpress editor regarding riots in football (soccer) stating American football puts you to sleep. This was a funnny remark, but it obviously hit a nerve at IVPress' sports, since it resulted in a huge rant of how Amrican football is the best in the world...this was also funny for its stupidity.

Letter to the Editor
January 3rd, 2007

Last week someone wrote a letter to the local paper complaining that it seemed ok to fly Canadian flags in the Valley, but not Mexican ones. Completely unrelated to his point in the letter, the writer had a go at football saying he preferred the kind of football where games didn’t end scoreless or in a riot. I put pen to paper and and my response appeared in Monday’s edition.

Voice: American football puts you to sleep

I write in response to the statement from Wednesday’s PROBE writer that he prefers his football with scoring and no riots.

I put it to the correspondent that the reason no riots occur in American football is that the crowd is fast asleep long before the game is finished.

And here's part of Eric Galvan's response (go to the link for the full article):

[...]To read a statement such as that is to fill my eyes with acid rain.

What the hell is this person talking about?

Football is not only the most exciting sport in the country, but it’s the most popular sport in the world. Just because a bunch of people in Third World countries play soccer doesn’t mean they like it. They just have no other choice.

Kenya is awesome at running and winning marathons, but do you think Kenyans run because they like it? No. They run because they don’t want to walk away from a charging pack of lions.

I’ve watched a lot of football in my day and I have never fallen asleep while watching or have seen anyone fall asleep.

The statement is ridiculous. To suggest people fall asleep while watching football games is to suggest there is no action worth watching.

There is a reason stadiums that hold 70,000 screaming fans sell out on a regular basis. There’s a reason people will go to any lengths to watch football on Saturdays and Sundays.[...]

Yeah he was trying to be sharp...but what an idiot.

What a buffoon Eric Galvan makes himself sound like by claiming that American Football is the best sport in the world. This is your typical American mentality where United States citizens consider themselves to be the best at everything.

I watch the NFL and I like it, but it is damn boring. All the penalties that cause the game to slooooooow down really piss me off. That's why I prefer watching games on NFL Replay where they eliminate all the BS and cut it down to just one hour. The same applies to all sports, but soccer and basketball are probably the most exciting team games out there.

But what kind of remark is that with the Kenyans? Kenya doesn't even have a decent soccer team and are ranked 127 in the FIFA World Ranking just a few above Borat's own Kazakhstan. EG doesn't know WTF he's talking about and to insult third-world countries because they do not possess planes, trains and automobiles is just rude.

American Football is exciting, but on average only for about 20% of the game. During the other 80% you'll find most viewers just talking smack about other things and drinking beer. The ones that are actually watching the game taking down stats on their notepads are only valued for their DD abilities.

So Eric Galvan, it's best you just STFU before you get swarmed by a mob of pissed of united Chicalones wearing America and Chivas jerseys during your next reporting assignment. It might already be too late, so consider changing your identity, that is of course if you even set foot into Mexico for tacos.

I believe I'm the minority in this, but I hate fooball. I can't even sit through 5 minutes of a game.

Other than the fact that it's pretty boring, there are other issues wih the whole concept of football. It usually brainwashes kids into thinking that it's the ultimate sport and if you are good enough at it, you can set academics aside and dedicate yourself to it (because let's face it, the real world totally gives a shit about how good you were in football back in high school). Wanna be a top football palyer? You need a huge gorilla-like body. Forget all those sissy cardio exercises that are actually good for you. A few shots of steroids, rigorous masturbation, and constant weight liftng will get you what you need. Who needs brain when you have brawn, right?

Don't get me wrong, I really have nothing against people that watch the sport or like to get together for a game and have a few beers. But the mentality that elchrist mentioned coupled with the "you're a good football player, you don't need English or math" attitude is pretty much the issue I have with it. Not to mention, athletes that practice soccer, tennis, swimming, and even skateboarding are obviuosly in much better shape than any pro football player I have ever seen.

He looks like he could be a center who's real intimate with his QB.

Could he be related to Mexican comedian Miguel "La Tartamuda" Galvan?

They sure look alike.

I doubt it since his rebuttal wasn't exactly funny, but moronic.

Eric "El Tarado" Galvan?
