The Calexico PD performed a sting operation during the last weeks of December where they used a 19 year old decoy to buy beer from local stores. Out of 37 of the targeted biz, 8 sold alcohol to the minor.
KSWT (Channel 13) reported on the story and pointed out the fact that El Gaucho (owned by councilman Ouzan) was one of the eight. Some of the others were Texaco and Sol Market on Andrade Dr. (formerly Meadows).
The funny thing is that the city put out a notice that they'd be doing this, but still over 20% of them got busted. It's not the first time Texaco (formerly Meadows Market) get nabbed as well.
Unfortunately these perpetrators are only getting a slap on the wrist with a small fine and are not having their liquor license suspended. Is it really worth making a few extra bucks by selling to minors or are clerks just being too lax (in other words: just don't give a shit)?

Don't hate.
Back in my day we could buy liquor at 3 different locations. Guaranteed.
One of these locations even sold liquor after hours.
Another even sold kritty.
All good.
I know we live in the US and all, but being so close to the border this isn't such a social issue. If it was, something should be done about letting high school students flow into Mex and come back all liquored up.
I'm not endorsing the sale of alcohol to minors, but all I'm saying is how quickly we forget when we were at that age. |

| Big deal! It's good that they crack down...but this seems more a PR thing than effective enforcement. Yeah what about kids going to Mex to get hammered? But it's the culture man! Most kids (and many adults)don't know how to drink moderately. Frat parties, spring break, night clubs...the message is it's cool and fun to get soaked. Todo con medida. |

Hey, I didn't ask where it came from. I just drank it, so I'm innocent. |

Not forgetting about drinking before turning 21, but the issue at heart is the legality and how relaxed the stores selling alcohol to minors are. My biggest issue is that if they are selling alcohol to a 19 year old, then I am pretty certain that they are selling alcohol to a 16 year old too... |

Laws reflect the majority, but not necessarily the views of all. The proximity to the border creates a different social acceptance to the lax application of laws. In contrast, go to the state of Utah and you'll see something different.
Are you saying that Calexico elite/politicians have corrupted all local newspapers? The truth is underage drinking is not a big deal here in Calexico. Not a story. Just like how you won't hear how the son of Mayor smokes weed up North.

What about parents that buy liquor to their children? Everyone knows an older bro, friend, or neighbor that can easily hook 16 year old up. Plus, if all else fails, cross the border. Remember Jetstop was closed down for repeated violations. Also, several stores around town have had their license suspended for breaking the law. |
