Any updates on the Calexico Armory? Wasn't the City supposed to make some kind of youth recreation facility out of it? Or did the money go to employee raises?

and ad-hoc committee has been created and its set to be endorsed by the city council. CURE and then city manager Luis Estrada got the armory for 180,000.

The armory committee is made of Leo Pacheco, Greg Gelman, Luz Maria Garcia, Gloria Romo, Alex Perrone, Korina Tabarez, Loli Torres, John Gamlin, and Steve Hyman.

They will work on the next face of the project that will be working on making the youth center.

Got to love radio dude for the insider stuff...

So when do we meet and do we already have an inside man to give us the scoop of the development for the youth center...

Yeah, a park would be awsome, like the one in EC, and with patos too.

Are we really actually do something about it, or this is just other sterile discussion?

Well, let's see what realistic ideas come up and we can advocate for them.

A nice park is a realistic idea, granted that it would need a lot of care from both the city and its surrounding citizens, but there are a lot of young families that I think would benefit from the park concept. From experience, I know that some of the things that have been discussed at the website have transcended to other mediums like the IV Press. (i.e. the ambulance problem at the beginning of the year)

So therefore yes, any realistic ideas that come forth on this thread and have a substantial following can be turned into something that can ultimately reach city hall.

I wish we could have a Hard Rock Cafe here in Calexico but I know its unrealistic. Maybe some day someone with deep pockets can make a huge investment and make it possible.

I really think that the idea of a park would be a great one. This idea not only would help the health of the people using it for physical fitness, but would also help as a green area and help clean the the air. As for the drug use, I think that a park like Nosotros Park is poorly located, and it is prime location for drug activity to occur. If you have a nice park in public view from all sides then not much drug use should occur. If our parks are riddled with drug use then it is our fault for not complaining or reporting this type of crime to the police. I remember when Rockwood Plaza was prime ground for drug use and overdoses and illegal activity occurred everyday. All other ideas are good and should be looked into, the armory ad-hoc committee has some ideas, but none include a large scale park, the one idea they have proposed includes closing the street between the wino park and the armory and provides no more green areas than the ones that are already present. I tell you my "patas" hurt from all the walking I do on the pavement and concrete. We need a park in every development the city approves, parks should be in place before the homes are released to the owners, that way developers will not forget about the promises they have made.
