On November 7, 2006, Calexicans will have to choose 3 of the following candidates for Calexico USD Board of Trustees:

Rita C. Huerta
Incumbent

Salvador T. Pacheco Jr.
Incumbent

Mohamed Asiad
Educator/Businessman

Gloria G. Romo
School Volunteer/Parent

Richard J. Cordero Jr.
Educational Administrator

Michael Castillo
Educational Administrator

Francisco J. Cardenas Jr.
Calexico Housing Commissioner

These candidates above simply put up signs, banners, advertisements with their name on them and expect us to pick them. Some have expensive looking campaigns, while some go with the "I got elementary students to make my sign, which shows I'm all about the kids" approach. Lots of them are simply faceless and some who aren't can't even smile for their photo. Geesh.

Realistically, many will vote for a certain candidate because they personally know them or have friends or family who do.

So who are these people who will influence our school system for the future, if chosen to? And who, if any, should we just avoid?

I spoke to a couple of teachers who are pretty knowledgeable and parents who got involved attending school baord meetings

Incumbents: Huerta and Pacheco- They are not very knowledgeable and they do a poor job of reviewing agendas-budgets. A group of students protested last year at the high school becasue of the poor facilities. Apparently Alvarez blew the budget on other things.Pacheco's best attribute is that he follows board member Ed Rivera's suggestions. Huerta is just a rubber stamp for Alvaraz. Castillo, Romo and Cordero are hard workers who are educated- they read-have real concerns for the community and they will not be a rubber stamp for Alvaraz. Asiad definitely won the battle of the signs. Cardenas???- Housing Authority Commissioner is not a job. Just an appointment to meet several times a year for the housing authority apartments.

Take down the incumbents, maybe that way the other board members will be whip back into shape so they can start the construction of the Caesar Chaves Elementary before my kids attend college(they haven’t even been born yet… and not planning to have any, any time soon)!

Cesar Chavez Elementary on Zapata Dr. is already in construction. Structures are almost up and it looks to be completed by the start of the 2007 school year.

Now this doesn't mean that the incumbents are doing their job, but only that work is finally being done on the school.

Time for some accountability.

I think what the board needs is knowledgable (im not sure if I spelled it right) people who know what the kids need and Castillo and Cordero meet these qualifications. From what I know they have both been teachers in the past and are still in educations but in the administrative level. Whoelse could make better decisions than these two guys who basically know what school really need. The current board members don't are making blind decisions, I bet they've never been to one of our schools and really experience the needs of these kids. To them being a board member is power, publicity and status. I bet none of the board members read or review the board ageandas and budgets. Why should we vote for Pacheco, if Rivera is already there, it's like giving two votes for Rivera. And Huerta just enjoys the social aspect of being a board queen. these are my two cents.

thank.......the Lizard King. Im out.
