I think the city is planning on raising the sales tax to 17.75%.

Uhm, I'd prefer they just sell cup cakes to raise more money. |

| There was talk about meters charging on Sundays because downtown merchants were complaining there was no parking spaces on sundays because people would park their cars and spend the day in Mexicali. I don't think it's such a bad idea, it's true people go to mex and leave their vehicles all day long parked downtown. Maybe we can get funding for a second Segway for the Christmas season. |

Oh, OK. I remember now even reading or posting about this.
I think it's a good idea myself. People do park their cars on Sunday in downtown Calexico and then go to Mex. We did this during the World Cup 2006.
I have no problem paying for parking, but what we do need is something like Louis Fuentes' suggestion about having a multi-level public parking garage in the downtown area. If you go to Mex walking, it's likely you'll spend more than 2 hours there especially with the common 1 hour wait time when crossing back walking.
The city should do it. Just don't pull an SD and charge 25 cents for 12 minutes. Not even LA charges that. |

Actually they do. That’s why no one ever goes to downtown LA...
Some cities like Santa Monica have things like 3 hours free parking... But you have to get out before the 3 hours end... if not then you get a ticket... but the cool thing is that after 5pm... Santa Monica parking structures only charge 3 dollars and it is parking till 2am... I think that if Calexico did something like 3 dollars from 5pm to 5am some of the clubbing crowd would be able to take advantage of it... heck maybe you might be able to get some after 6pm hour crowd in downtown Calexico and not the ghost town it becomes after 6pm. |

This could work.
How many club and bar goers hit Mexicali on a Friday or Saturday night? It has got to be in the thousands, so you can only fit approx. 5 people in one car. If a parking structure in Calexico were to open and just half of the party people parked stateside and taxied it to the bar/club, this business would be a hit.
1000/5 X 50% = 100 cars
That's $300 bucks.
The parking lot would need security, maybe two of them at minimum wage or a bit higher and you're still making a profit. Otherwise the parking structure is just wasted space during this time.
Of course, the taxi system in Mex would need to cater to these people and be tourist friendly. Transit in IV could get smart and transport these people back home if they were under the influence or there's always the designated driver. |
