About a month ago, Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia became national news when gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides leaked tapes where Gov. Schwarzenegger called the Assemblywoman a "hot blood Latina". But what really caught my attention is when they stated that Bonnie Garcia was the Assemblywoman for Palm Springs... That basically shook me to the core.

Why was is that even in California the interest of the people of the Imperial Valley is represented by politicians who live at least 100 miles away?

So I did some research and the following are links to the maps that show how the districts are drawn.

Cal Senate District 40 - Denise Moreno Ducheny
http://www.senate.ca.gov/~newsen/senators/districtmaps.HTP

Cal Assembly District 80- Bonnie Garcia
http://republican.assembly.ca.gov/members/map_pop.asp?Dist=80

US House of Reps District 51 - Bob Filner
http://www.house.gov/filner/districtmap.htm

Not one of them is a native from the Imperial Valley or has its main office in the Imperial Valley. Out of the three districts, the one that has the most representation in terms of land mass with in the Imperial Valley is the US House of Representatives District 51.

Why is it that we have more representation in the US Congress than in our own state?? Aren’t we a bigger county within the state than with the rest of the nation? How come we are represented by outsiders?

What do you guys think??

It's called "gerrymandering"- Imperial County has low population demographics-compared to neighboring San Diego-Riverside County. Local candidates have trouble raising big dollars for these expensive campaigns plus we have piss-poor voter turnouts. I will make one prediction: Luis Fuentes will probably be our best choice for one of these races...Yes, I just pissed all of you off......He has education, money and the drive.....Bonnie Garcia and Denise Ducheny look like they just got off the Numero Uno Bus i

If David Dhillon was unable to win, I seriously doubt Luis Fuentes has any chance. If any Valley politician truly has a chance, I say it would be Sedalia Sanders.

Case in Point. Why do we have to have Politicians who have lobbyist that pay millions where the politician and the lobbyist are from outside the county??? dosen't that mean that the needs of the county come second to the needs of the other counties with wealthier donators? I know this will probably not change anytime in the next 50 years but think about it... Why does the Imperial Valley, let people from other places receiving donations from other people put the interest of the county second? Don't you think maybe thats the reason why the IID was able to sell water to San Diego with us being able to do anything about it? Because both our congressman and our state senador are from San Diego and the San Diegan interest always come first to them???

Hey Loco- I like your passion and interest for the community.....My opinion: It's a national thing- the rich get richer- the poor get poorer. The rich get better entitlements- the poor gets screwed with retail miniumum wage type jobs with no benefits/no health insurance. Look at the local city hall- rich get freebies- the poor get a hefty water bill hike to help rich people. That's why poor people have revolutions

Are you suggesting we have a local revolution?

I just saw The Mexican-American War on The History Channel, so I'm pissed. If you're looking for recruits, count me in...
