There was a "emergency" meeting yesturday at 5pm at City Council Chambers were the city met in Close session.
The Close session was about selling the building on Scaroni Rd. (The Movie place). Why? only the council knows. The fact is that the movie theater has been doing bad lately since the mall opened. If the place is sold,(as two or three councilmembers would be thrilled to do it) the movies will be shut down in Calexico. It was a close session Item so nothing could be said. The Buildng is owned by a former Mayor of Palm Springs and Metropolitan is renting it. Again, nothing can be said because it was close session.
Applebees is doing bad also and there is a talk that they might be closing if they don't pick up business. But the one that has done terrible since opeining is SONICS. I know that everyone wanted a Sonics in Calecia but now that we have it we ignore it. I spoke to some people that work there last week and they told me that business has been doing pretty bad this last few months. No word if they are shutting down.
Calexico 10, Applebees, and Sonics. Three greats places to go but they might leave us in the near future. Looks like the mall is taking all the pie and people in Mexicali are now bypassing us and going to El Centro.
Sad but true. |

Honest to GOD, anything that comes to Calexico and is not managed by outsiders turns to shit!
The theater is only 7 years old and it looks like an abandoned lot, the trees are dried up, the facades of the building are unclean, the Calexico Ten sign seems cluttered and broken, they use different letters for the same movie. That might not seem like a big deal but it sure looks uninviting from the freeway.
I only went to Sonics once since it opened. Why because the customer service sucked balls (surprise surprise). I just want my server to seem happy to serve me and be polite and prompt when I ask for things. Not look like he or she hates their job and honeslty could care less for the customer.
Applebees is not all that bad in terms of service, compared to other places. But like many returning people in Calexico I hate the fact that its seems like a f-ing chismoso hangout where I have to care about what I wear or how much weight I gained. I know that every new attraction in Calexico is the same but it needs to stop. |

Looks like competition is winning out.
Calexico 10 is outdated. 7 years is a good run especially when they haven't even given the local a touch me up. How do you expect your car to turn if you haven't serviced it in 7 years? What if you never washed it?
Applebees. Why would Mexicali residents want to eat at Applebees when they got their own? The one in Mex has more vibe. I doubt that this Applebee's is matching up to corporate numbers, but corporate has to understand that Applebee's is not the number one choice down here as in other parts of America. This ain't Talladega Nights. Still, most of the time I walk into Applebee's the place is moderately full.
Sonics. Inferior product. I honestly believe that if Calexico opens up an In n Out that the lines would reminisce of those of the Las Vegas local.
Again, nothing to do with Calexico or Mexicali, but with what Calexico has to offer.
There is no place for sympathy in a Capitalist society. |

El Engenheiro has a good point. Bad management.
Not from the companies but from the city. There are at least three members of the City council that are dying to sell the place. When I was there yesturday some city staff were sad and angry because the theater was going to close. They were really expecting that to happend yesturday. NO ACTION WAS TAKEN by the council.
As I said, in this city nothing gets done because at least three councilmembers dont have a life of their own politically speaking because they are sold to developers who give them money to work on their intrest only and not what the city needs. There are a lot of intrest and that's what is keeping the city to be better. A lot of projects are in the table but nothing gets done.
Its only chismes and some concentrate on what people say. They only care about what Tirado says, what ortega says, what nene says and what was the hot topic at YUM YUM's. That's it.
I that ran for city council could tell you 100 million horror stories about the people that are incharge of the city that you people will never believe. The city council just doesn't care of what is being done in Calexico and I believe they don't care about the future of Calexico. They only care when is the other check from the developer comes so they could defend their intrest and not the constituents of the city.
The General feeling is that the movies will be gone soon and Sonics will throw the towel as well. Applebees? who knows.
Calexico will suffer a backlash pretty soon many people (like me) will consider moving away to a place with good living, calm, away from chismes, dirty politics, and intrest.
There was a time were I tough Calexico could become something big and amaizing. As a friend told me last week, its the same politics but with diferent people and the only difference between the Calexico that he left 20 years ago and now is that are a little bit of more stores.
I hope we can retain does business. One of the reasons I decided to leave politics was because I came to the conclusion that Calexico will not become better because the actions of the city but it will be the citizen of Calexico that will take the initiative to bring, Cultural, business, and entertainment development to the city. It will be the citizen that will that will do great restaurants, cultural events, will bring entertainment, and will bring a better city without the help of the city.
Why do you thinks the cultural arts commission has not gone anywere? because it is part of the city. If the ARTS Commission was an independent no-profit managed by the right people Calexico would be the epicenter of art in the valley right now. I mean it.
If we lose those business then it will confirm what I just told you. Lets see what happens. |

Air it out, man. Blow the fuckin' whistle!
If no one says shit about all the bad shit going on, it's going to always be the same shit in this town. It's time to get rid of the bullshit.

As much as we hate seeing local biz go out of biz you can't really sympathize when they don't work hard to stay on top. It seems like many local business owners get complacent with their current financial situation and thus do not expand their business and/or strive to improve their service.
Like verbal mentioned, they've cashed out. They've already bought/leased their Escalade or Hummer and bought themselves a few expensive toys like quads, big screen TVs and so forth. They think in the now.
Customer fucking service. That's all we ask for. Some of them provide it, but the majority don't. If your product is mediocre, but your service rocks, we like you better for it. Why don't you get it?
I don't expect constant ass kissing, but common sense courtesy and the occassional check-up to make sure I'm not choking or I'm not about to bail on the bill. You don't have to like me, but pretend for a few minutes cause I pay your damn bills. |

First of all, Radiodude is sensationalizing his claims. That's his style. But there is no doubt that some shenanigans do occur in local government, although not to the extent that Rd is proclaiming.
Regardless of the amount of "horror stories" which exist in town, Calexico's citizens need to stop blowing off these allegations and quit the bullshit mentality of "Only in Calexico" and do something. We can do something, but we need to know about it.
We need to ridicule those who are shaming us. If we don't, then those who run Calexico will continue to take advantage of the fringe benefits we allow them to run wild with. Are we not ashamed for having let this happen for generations?
So Radiodude, if you got some dirt then post it. Whether it's on Calecia.com or on the paper you're writing for. |

| Calexico is a very poor town- high unemployment, low wages and low education levels. Voter participation is nil and citizen activism is also very low. The two largest employers in town include the school district and the city. I understand the school district also has serious problems- overcrowding- poor morale-animosity between administration and teachers. |

So we're poor. Does that mean we deserve sub-par quality of life?
I'm going to start going to the city council meetings again. I feel so damn ignorant for being uniformed about the small town I live in.
Who wants to join me? |
