Over the weekend, I noticed the Tijuana/San Ysidro port of entry had the following "Pledge to Travelers" posted before each booth as border crossers came back into the United States:

We pledge to cordially greet and welcome you to the United States.
We pledge to treat you with courtesy, dignity, and respect.
We pledge to explain the CBP process to you.
We pledge to have a supervisor listen to your comments.
We pledge to accept and respond to your comments in written, verbal, or electronic form.
We pledge to provide reasonable assistance due to delay or disability.

I don't recall seeing any "Pledge to Travelers" in any of the two Mexicali/Calexico port of entries. Maybe we need to start handing out this pledge as fliers to the customs agent each time we cross?

I haven't really harassed by the agents; a couple of times just had some heavy questioning, once they did take out the back seat of my old 300zx and their dog left teeth marks on my lunch bag (tuna sandwich). Other than that they've been alright, especially now that I have a more serious image hahaha Laughing

Any harassment stories on your part?

p.s. nothing found under the seat.

I used to get a hard time from an Asian (Philipino?) agent who I always had difficulty understanding. He'd do just about everything in his power, but send me to secondary. Though the day he found out what I did for a living, he practically wanted to be my best friend.

Most of the time, there's no problem with the agents and those travelers who get harrassed normally deserve it, but if they are going to post a "Pledge to Travelers" then they should at least stick to the first two items on their pledge list. I rarely get an agent who's hospitable and most of the time they expect me to initiate the conversation. If they want to know my citizenship, then they can ask. Otherwise, don't expect me to fearfully provide them with all my information.

It's obvious most of them hate their job and the monotony of the work can drain you, not to mention being stuck in a booth for eight hours sitting on your ass. I don't know if it's the paycheck which keeps them happy, but if they hate what they do so much they can find themselves another jobby-job.

"Be nice. Say thank you..."

Props to customs agent Payton in the Calexico West port of entry.

This agent should be a role model for all other U.S. customs agents. He was swift and courteous and knew how to treat people.

After he let us go, I told him to "have a good night." Payton then 1-upped me by telling me to "have a better one." Man, that kind of pissed me off...

Seriously man, mega-props to Payton.

I've had the priviledge of crossing three times and having him welcome me into the United States.

I had to let him know that he should be the de facto standard for US CBPs.

When I let him know he checked our citizenship for the second straight night, he responded with "this same black guy!?" The dude is a sport.

Props to Payton! Make sure you give Payton his props!

CBP Officer Payton is one of the few officers at the POE that treats everybody cool. But if you give him some attitude he'll come down on you. I think he has a lifetime supply of Redbull since he is always so energetic, no matter what hour it is.

Anyone know if Agent Payton still works at the Calexico POE?

I haven't seen him in months.

Props to Payton!
