| I have been seeing alot of advertisement for Beamspeed in the IV press and other local publications. Has anyone had any experience with this service? I have cable and I am tired of paying close to $50 bucks for it. I used to have DSL at my house and cancelled it to swith over to cable and now ATT will not provide the service at the same house where I used to have it. Why? I have no other options! |

Ouch.
I don't know of anyone who has Beamspeed.
I remember it being popular in Yuma and remember it being planned for roll out way before DSL hit the market here, but after I subscribed to DSL I never looked back.
I don't know why AT&T (SBC) wouldn't let you get back on their DSL. Did you have the basic package or a faster connection?
I've tried to upgrade from basic, but keep getting told that I'm too far from their CO, which I was told I'm about 15,000 or so feet. With these low prices right now, I'm looking to upgrade. People in El Centro have no problem getting the ~3.0Mbps connection. |

| I am thinking about pulling the trigger on the beamspeed, I have asked and I cant get a straight answer from AT&T as to why I cant reestablish the service. They tell me that the speed that they wished to achieve was not there and therefore they do not offer the service. I used to have the basic and I was happy, but like a moron I thought that cable was going to be faster and I cant really tell the difference between the two. I have friends in the central (old) Calexico and they have no problem getting the service. I have no options? |

Before you sign up, have a read here from a customer in Yuma, AZ where they basically state they are down half the time and customer service never shows up to fix their unit.

Beamspeed was installed in my house about a year ago. I have had several problems with it but the customer service was fast, especially during the trial, and fixed the problem. About once a month Beamspeed will not work for me but I do live out in the country and the customer service said I was in a bad spot. I’m running the 10 mbps.
The reviews were very harsh on the product. The service has improved since those were written.
I hope this helped. |

I've had Beamspeed for around 6 months. For me, it works great. I live out in the boonies about 4 miles from Calecia. I'm surrounded by trees, and get download speeds of about 60kbps+ on their Tier B service. To me, it's pretty much like dsl, but more expensive. You would probably pay the same as with cable. I pay $50 for the Tier B service, 512kb up, 128kb down. If you cannot get DSL, just stick with your cable service. Or, bug the crap out of AT&T to get your DSL service back.
As for the Beamspeed service, its actually pretty good. I had read that review on DSL reports, but gave them a try anyways since they have a 30 day money back guarantee. Called them up, a guy came to my house on a saturday. Connected the modem, and said it was good to go. Hooked it up to my router and has been stable since. The only times the signal drops or wont connect at all, is when its very windy or when my trees bloom. One time I called cust. service and they told me that one of their towers got damaged from the wind, but was up the next day. But i've noticed everytime its windy, it acts funny. Overall, the service is great. I can play halo online with almost no lag. I was considering Hugues satellite internet, but it is too expensive, and has a crappy lag. Beamspeed met all my expectations. |

I've had BeamSpeed since last July and it's a big improvement over my 26.4kbps dialup connection I had previously.
At the time I actually wanted to see if I could do work with their company, after I had done some research into starting a Wireless ISP (WISP) and then learning how expensive it was because you have to purchase the radio spectrum from the FCC, which is really expensive.
I got to speak with the owner, his son, and the mysterious "money man" who was one of those not so jolly guys that always seems to be angry...but I guess I would be too if people were always after my money.
From what I can recall the family has relatives (in Idaho, I believe, or one of those other states that starts with an I) that also run a WISP and are able to collaborate as far as training and other things are concerned.
The service is alright. I'd say about once every 1-2 weeks I'll have quite a few hours where the service is unavailable or just too slow to use, but other than that it's been really good.
I for some reason get charged $50 a month for the service, compared to all the people I've recommended who get the same plan for $40 a month.
I haven't gotten any free months of service for those recommendations either, come to think of it.
What was mentioned above however is true: if you can get one of the wired offerings from AT&T or TimeWarner then go for it, because you'll be getting considerably more bandwidth at a better price. The main reason I have it is because I have no other alternative unless I decide to get a T1 line, and I don't exactly have $400 a month to spend on that.
