I came across an article on the Washington Post about rubber sidewalks that are being adopted by a few cities across the country and I was wondering if this would be a good fit for Calexico. The older neighborhoods around town have some real bad sidewalks, so maybe this could be a good eco-friendly project the city could try.
The rubber sidewalks are 3 times as durable as concrete ones, yet they cost 3 times the amount of concrete ones. Although they are friendlier for the environment in regards to trees, are less prone to cracking which prevents lawsuits due to related accidents, and I would assume are less painful if you happen to smack your face on one (faceplant). They're completely made out of recycled tires, which helps solve part of the problem with tire waste.
Only drawback I can think of is riding a skateboard on one, since it would probably slow you down, but people might enjoy walking on them.

Yeah. They should buy them at Costco. |

Yeah. They should buy them at Costco. |
Then return them after 10 years for some new ones? |

| Good idea for the downtown area. Recycling is good. I don't see them ripping the current sidewalks anytime soon unless they were damaged. Any other drawbacks besides the cost. |
