So I went to the mariachi festival. First two acts were not that good.... well, the first one is made up of newcomers so it's understandable but the second one was just sorry. They just whinned and whinned. The third and fourth kicked ass, however, but my main complaint about the night was the sound. If I'm not mistaken, this thing is put up with the help of Viejas which is notorious for bringing good acts to reachable driving distances from the Imperial Valley so you would think that they would have a lot of experience with this sort of things. This time though it seemed as the sound engineers hadn't a clue of what they were doing and the results were evident throughout the whole night. I didn't think that I got my $20 dollars worth either.

Aren't the sound services normally provided by a local DJ. In fact the one that put together the 1st (and Last) Annual Imperial Valley Music Festival?

I think Viejas was most likely a major event sponsor and not the actual event organizer.

I passed by the Saturday night of the mariachi festival and it looked pretty good. A lot better than last year, in fact.

The street between Krummet Park and Dool School was closed off for "VIP" attendee parking, which somehow gave it the effect that it was more successful this year.

The park was surrounded by huge vehicles, including fire trucks. I'm not sure why, but you couldn't see into the concert as you passed by.

Too bad I'm not a hardcore mariachi aficionado, otherwise I'd probably attend it annually. If they can add the one man band mariachi from El Mariachi, I'm there!

Well, it could have been a local DJ for the sound, but then again, most of the equipment boxes where they usually have the mixers and compressors and all that stuff had the viejas logo on it. That's why I assumed that viejas we doing sound. Oh, and also the guys running around the stage miking up the people had their viejas staff shirt.

Well, I guess it was obvious then: it was a Viejas job.

Hey ElWusso, was that you that wrote to the Probe complaining about the sound quality recently?:

"...The crowd was large and enthusiastic and the show was packed with the handsome Latino men I love.

The only negative was that the sound and lighting for the show were horrible....

Music Lover, Calexico"
