Driving around Calexico I've noticed how much Spanglish is used. I do not mean by the people, I'm talking about business and signs. I don't drive around Calexico much I just work there, but I've notice some signs that have caught my eye and got me thinking about “Calexico's Unofficial Language.”
For Example:
Food 4 Less has a banner on the Southside wall that reads:
"Carniceria Now Open"
Across the street there's a Ma and Pa store with a sign that reads:
" Beer... Wine... Carniceria... Fruta"
Have we lived in Calexico so long that this does not stand out as peculiar?
Are there any more Spanglish signs in Calexico?
Identify them. |

Hmmm... I'll have to pay closer attention to this as I drive around town from now on. I normally catch the typos and such, but the Spanglish seems to have never come to my close attention.
I guess I have no problem with it, since "Carniceria Now Open" sounds a lot better than "Meat Market Now Open." At least to me.
I did recently notice that Sol Market's official name is El Sol Meat Market and not El Sol Carniceria or El Sol Mercado.
Anyway, if I were an outsider driving through and saw a lot of Spanglish on the signage, then that would make it more interesting as a passerby. It would be a clear sign that I was very close to Mexico. Dangerously close. |

I guess people rather have something that "sounds a lot better" instead of using proper English.
I just think that people should pick one language and stick with it. |
