OK, so the only thing available in the valley for consumers (that isn't a rip-off) is dial-up and satellite. We've all been awaiting the arrival of broadband for years now and nothing seems to be happening. I've heard some rumors and read some "inside" info on broadband development, but that's just not good enough.
I wanna know WTF is really going on! |

SBC is scheduled to deploy DSL in the Imperial Valley (Calexico, El Centro and Brawley, to be exact) on December 16, 2002. We'll see. |

Satellite sucks, though. You get latency up the ass. With cable, you have to share the pipe with everyone in your zone, so you're screwed if you've got a warez puppy in your midst. Wireless? Pass.
DSL is the way to go for consumer broadband. Isolated and clean. |

You're right about the latency, but I wouldn't say that it sucks. I've been able to download at speeds upto 300 kbps. From one sight I was getting like 749 kbps. The slowest speeds I get are about 40-50kbps(10x faster than dial-up). That's pretty fast. And that's when I'm downloading files from someone else, who has a slow connection.
I can't play games over the internet because of the latency, but I don't have any interest in that, anyway.
I would rather have DSL, but I wasn't willing to wait. If you can wait, you should. If you need broadband now, and can't wait to see if DSL or cable is coming soon, then get a 2-way satellite system.
I just don't see any large companies spending all the millions of dollars for a service that will be used by a few. I know that the state of California subsidizes these companies costs so that they will provide rural areas with broadband, but it still has to prove profitable. And, unless these companies offer a fast DSL connection for $30 or under, I doubt very many people will pay for it. Even in areas where it is widely available, the vast majority still use dial-up. |

Their's no denying that satellite is available now in the area and provides fast transfer rates, but I can't justify the high latency for what I want to do with my connection.
I'm interested in gaming. High bit-rate streaming media too. Remote administration. Using real-time thin client applications. Data synchronization. VPN'ing into work. Maybe even doing some video conferencing. All of which happen to be affected dramatically by latency.
Man, I've been waiting to reclaim my Low Ping Bastard status since I moved back to the valley.

They have to do it anyway to upgrade their telephony infrastructure. DSL is just one of the many services they can offer once the upgrades are completed.
Judging from what I've heard and the people I've spoken to, there is enough demand here in the valley to make it an economically viable service for the provider.
It may not be $30 a month down here (but probably will), but people will be all over it like stink on Mike Trash's armpits. |

| An acquaintance of mine works for Adelphia. He told me that they were supposed to make DSL available to the Valley in August, but then that's around the time Adelphia ran into financial problems. |

Yeah, they've been telling us things like that for 2 years now just so we don't revolt. You can trust them. They lie! |

Any recents news on this effort?
I'm I going to be checking out Calecia.com with a DSL connection come Christmas time? |
