SBC is scheduled to deploy DSL in the Imperial Valley (Calexico, El Centro and Brawley, to be exact) on December 16, 2002. We'll see.

Any recents news on this effort?

I'm I going to be checking out Calecia.com with a DSL connection come Christmas time?

It looks like SBC Pacific Bell has scratched their plans to implement DSL in the Imperial Valley. The reason: not economically viable. There just isn't enough of a consumer base in the valley to justify the implementation cost (which is said to range between $3-6 million.) They're also going through some financial hardships right now, so that also pushes the DSL implementation in the valley to low priority status.

Apparently, enough people in the valley got wind of the December 16, 2002 planned implementation date that they had to print a retraction in the Imperial Valley Press. I can't confirm this since I don't read the local paper. Did anyone of you see it?

This information came from a very reliable source within SBC itself, so it's pretty concrete.

So, with the low probability of DSL in the near future, and Adelphia's bankruptcy pretty much ensuring cable Internet access won't make it's way here either, you're pretty much screwed if you want low-cost broadband (unless you go satellite or wireless, that is.)

This is one instance where I welcome being proven wrong.

I'm sure I'm off on the figures. I either heard $3-6 million or billion and I think the implementation cost wasn't just for the valley, I think it included other places too.

Still. You're right. We're fucked.

Alright, it took me some time to get over the scrapping of the DSL implementation. I should've known better, but with the internal memos presented to me, it seemed like a sure shot.

So what are our alternatives now? Satellite seems to be the best option, but the start-up costs are so high. Wireless is another, but I'm not putting a 30 foot antennae up... not even sure if I'm allowed to.

Anyone seen any good alternatives/deals out there?

If anyone wants to buy one of my two Direcway Dishes for $200 ($600 regular price), service will only cost $60/mo. The service isn't cheap, but download speeds are really good. I've only got one, so let me know, ASAP.

We have DSL in the valley. I have confirmed it (by phone and Web) and will be ordering it tonight!

Congratulations! SBC Yahoo! DSL is available for 760-357-####.
