This is way retarded...
Teachers, don't you realize that governor Gray Davis has unveiled ~$10 B in budget cuts ($1.7 B from education)!? That means you're all fucked. If I were you, I'd get my ass to work on time and be glad I have a job.
And if you were a teacher who sat out on this day, your ass should be immediately fired!

Mass ‘sick-out' at Calexico school district
By AARON CLAVERIE
Staff Writer
CALEXICO — About one-third of the Calexico Unified School District's teachers called in sick today, forcing district administrators to call in substitutes and recruit volunteers to keep classrooms full.
District Superintendent Roberto Moreno said school would not be canceled today.
"Oh, no. Things are progressing as normal ... relatively normal," he said around 8:30 this morning.
The mass "sick-out," as it was referred to by someone who said she is a district teacher, apparently was organized to protest the district board's refusal to act on the teachers' latest contract proposal.
Teachers have been working without a contract since June 30. Teachers made their latest proposal Nov. 6.
Moreno said, "We agreed to take it back to the Board of Education. The next negotiating date is set for Wednesday."
According to scuttlebutt among teachers, the bug that has bitten one-third of the teachers could keep them laid up Tuesday.

Before the teachers at Calexico High School start complaining about getting more money, maybe they should start worrying about getting their student's test grades up.
Every year you can expect it: they're gonna strike. And every year you can expect it: the second lowest test scores in the state of California !!! Number one on the list is Compton High School.
This teachers need to stop complaining, go back to school, learn how to speak, read, and write again (because they are awful at it) and then comeback and strike if they want to. |

| See that's the problem, Who the FUCK wants to come to Calexico and teach! NOBODY that isn't from here, so what happens all the good teachers are fucking leaving to get paid more and what do we get, emergency credintialed teachers! Sure i'd start working with emergency credintials in a hot minute, doesn't mean i'd be the best qualified. Now who come there isn't this much, stop complaining and shit when your precious PD get a 10% raise. You guys need to fucking check yourselves too, To change this town we need to change the people, and that starts with students. What you don't seem to get is that to be a shitty teacher you work from 8-4, to be a good teacher you work a lot harder then that and if you ain't from the valley who the fuck is really going to want to do that? |

35 Grand for 9 months of work sounds pretty good to me. Not only that, but they get paid a month in the summer, just because. These teachers are making around 30 dollars an hour. If they want more money, why don't they teach summer school? They get paid wayyyyy more for teaching in Summer School, but noooooo, how are they going to give up they're 3 month vacation (excluding the month off from Christmas). The thing is, these guys don't want to work, but want to get paid like they do.
F.Y.I. If teacher worked as many hours as normal people do (8 hours a day, 12 months a year.) They would get paid around 50-60 thousand dollars a year (starting salary). If you don't believe me, do the math. If these teachers want more money, maybe they should get a job where they actually work. |

you have no idea how much a good teacher actually is worth. Just go to a school were teachers get paid well, and then compare to CHS. If there is no difference in education you win this argument.
but you know better then that.
so fuck it lets and end this discussion or else i'll kill you |

Ever heard of cost of living? I'm sure you have.
It's more expensive to live in other cities and as new teachers make the "smart" decision to move to another city to get paid more, they also have to pay more for rent/mortgage, utilities, etc.
The smart teachers stay here and work.

I'm sorry, but this doesn't make sense to me. Could you rephrase your comment?
Regarding the police department, they aren't deserving of a raise.

Are you talking to us, the posters, or the teachers?
If you're talking to us, then you're way wrong. We're discussing education here and this problem is fixed with the teachers. If the teachers don't excel at their job, then the students won't either.
Teachers need to get raises based on progress and results. If the teachers do a good job and the students get good grades, then maybe they'll get their raises. If families see that the schools in Calexico are excellent, then maybe they'll move here to raise their kids, thus creating a higher demand for teachers and higher pay.
You should only be rewarded for success.

I work from 8AM to 5PM and sometimes put in extra hours and don't get paid extra for it. It's my job to do my job. Whatever it takes.
And you know something else? I'm part of a union too, but you aren't going to see me picketing outside when there's work to do. I can complain all day about how little I get paid, but I'm still going to do my job.

That's OK. There's plenty of people who do come back, by choice, who are willing to work here. Especially teachers. |

I know how much teachers are worth...
Good teachers are worth their current pay. As spic-ole explained, they make a very good hourly rate and if they'd like a little more, they can work during the summer just like people in other jobs do.
Bad teachers are worth shit.
They all (good or bad) need to be evaluated every year. If they rate poorly, then they either go on probation or lose their job.
You don't have to personally care about the students, but you do need to do what you're obligated to do and that's whatever it takes to get the students to learn. And no I don't mean Stand And Deliver.

Well obviously Calexico is rated 2nd, so I GUESS you win...
Like I stated, the teachers need to do better at their job, regardless of how inexperienced they are. Our ranking will never go up unless the schooling improves and that starts with the teacher's curriculum and efforts.
If teachers need to improve on their curriculum, then they need to do whatever they can, be it share ideas with other teachers, get more education while working, read a book on improvement, etc. etc. etc. |

Do you know how impossible it is to prove your success as an educator? What fucking test score! you've got to be kidding me. What are you going to have all the ex-students of a teacher come up and say, yeah this guy made a change in my life. That the only true way you could tell who was good and who wasn't.

Yeah dude but would you do your job for 30 grand a year. NO, you wouldn't because you know your services are worth more then that! So don't even compare the two. |

Other organizations find ways to evaluate their employees. I'm sure educational institutions can do the same.
Maybe you do have a thorough evaluation form at the end of a class/semester. Sure, you may get a few remarks stating that the teacher was a moron, but there are students who take their studies seriously and they will provide some valuable feedback.

Yes, I have.
It's more than $30K a year. More like $35K. And that's only for 9 months worth of work. Add another 3 months of work at the same pay and you get between $50K and $60K.
What do you want? Teachers to get paid $50K+ for 9 months of work?
Bottom line... if someone doesn't want this "shitty pay" they shouldn't become a teacher. If they're doing it for "the cause" then STFU. |

A good teacher will have students that have good test scores (at least in the subject he/she teaches.) You can't expect all the students to pass with flying colors, and you can always prove your success as an educator by comparing your students test scores to the test scores they had in the previous semester/year.
For example: Juanito last year scored a 60 percent.
This year he scored a 75 percent.
=Good teacher. Keeps job, get's raise in a couple of years.
Jorge scored a 52 percent last year.
This year Jorge scored a 47 percent.
=Bad teacher, let him/her picket all they want. No raise.
Suzy scored a 80 percent last year.
This year she scored a 92 percent.
=Good teacher. Keeps job, gets raise in a couple of years.
You see mars, it is that simple. That is how you can tell if a teacher is a good teacher. The problem is, you've got a lot of pretty worthless teachers at Calexico High School that feel they deserve a six-figure income for baby-sitting. They don't teach. They brag that they don't do anything at work all day, I've heard them. I know some of them.
Here's what the district should do. Get all of the picketing teachers, fire them, and offer a job at a lower pay. This will teach them. They need the job and they know they aren't going to be able to find work for a few weeks or months. |
