I've recently been hearing a lot of bad news coming out of the club scene in Mexicali that it's making the party scene in Mex sound pretty dangerous for people who are new to going out for some nightlife in our metropolis next door.

I'll admit I don't go out much to Mex to drink anymore, but I did recently hit up La Uni Irish Pub, which I would say is probably the best bar to exist in Mexicali... ever. Though even bad news out this place has arisen, but let's start off with the biggest incident of the recent weekends.

Apparently a 22 year old Calexico resident, initials Ch. W., was out clubbing and got into some type of confrontation that ended up with him getting his ass kicked, big time. The dude apparently got beat by three "jarheads" from the US military which resulted in ChW getting dragged by a car and having his heel break/rub off. This sounds like some real crazy shite, I know, but apparently he no longer has a heel to step on and the US serviceman stationed in Yuma, AZ are going to get away with it. That's unless the victim presses charges and fully pursues making the rest of their lives a living hell.

In another incident, a girl who was at a club apparently was served up a rochet (date rape pill) by someone with mal-intentions and took her victim in front of the club. A witness claimed that a cop actually passed by and did nothing because she seemed to be enjoying it. What!? Exactly! Sexual acts in public are completely illegal, so I don't know if this is a complete fabrication, along with the rest of the story.

This isn't to say that something bad is bound to happened to you, although you really do need to have some common sense when you're out partying , especially in a different country. Don't trust anyone you don't know and always keep your eye on your drink, even when it's being served up. Also, don't be Mr. Tough Guy because you never know if the other guy might be wielding something that you'll end up regretting you ever even laid your sight on them.

So have fun, but mucho ojo...

I heard something on the radio some days back which was talking about this issue. A man who was a resident of Mexicali called and told his story. His daughter had just turned 18 and was hellbent on going clubbing the day of her birthday. He was reluctant about letting her go until he decided to let her go under the condition that he will go also, but away from her so that she does her thing with her friends and all. So he goes to the club and is keeping an eye on his daughter, from the bar. She is basically just dancing and hanging out with her friends and having a good time. Then, the bartender approaches him and says "You like that girl (referring to his daughter)? I'll put her to sleep for you if you want".

So yeah...watch out for the bartender also.

That's why I don't really hang out at the Mexicali clubs anymore. My prime clubbing days were between the ages of 18-24. Now I'm 28 and I'm over the Mexicali club scene. I've been there and done that -- it's the same ol' bullshit. There were several nights were my brothers, friends and I were lucky to have gotten home alive because of all the haters at the clubs starting shit. I feel sorry for all the chicks that have to worry about getting drugged and raped down there. I'm glad I don't have any sisters to worry about.

Instead of being cautious about whether going to Mex or not because of dangers south of the border that affect the good residents from the north, think of who is really causing the trouble, and sorry to be an ass, but Calecianos and other IV residents are not known for their good behavior while going to those clubs. It is the clubs that they frequent the ones that end up in fights. I also had my clubbing stage (19-24) and the fights I can remember most of them involved calecianos, some mischievous Army guy, a group of bald pocho cholos, etc...

the last saturday of january, around at 3:00 in the morning I witnessed a terrible fight just in front of the car border crossing station while I was in the pedestrian crossing place behind the fence coming back from La Taberna, at least 20 u.s. customs ran to them and managed to handcuff at least 4, while hordes of bald guys ran away to Mex, the u.s. customs couldn't chase them because it was not their territory anymore. You could hear the needless screams of girls from a few blocks away, everybody was drunk having their $hit. Imagine if the u.s. customs had used their guns, thinking that it was a terrorist attack.

Speaking of club horror stories and rochets, my friend Concepcion used to go clubbing in mexicali at least twice a month. One night she went and someone (we suspect it was either the bartender or this guy who was trying to dance with her) put something in her drink. The last thing she remembered was feeling more drunk than normal from just a few drinks. The next day she woke up in front of her house in calex and she didn't know how she got there. Then fast forward a few months and she found that she was pregnant, but she hadn't had unprotected sex with anybody (at least not that she knew of) so it had to have been the guy at the club. She had the baby a few years ago and she is raising him now, and she still goes to the clubs every once in a while. Some people never learn.
