There are a lot of Japanese/Sushi restaurants open now in Mexicali and it seems like more and more open every couple of months.

The new(est) one I've noticed, which has actually been open for months, was a sushi place on Justo Sierra or Benito Juarez that so much resembles a Starbucks, it should be listed on the Blatant Local Trademark Infringement thread. I've yet to try it, as well as most of the other sushi places in Mex.

I ate at Sakura last night after not doing so for almost six months and it was delicious. I had myself some Geisha Rolls, escalopas, yakimeshi and of course an ice cold Bohemia. It was all great, except for them not having any tempura ice cream and that damn Mexican law that restricts you from smoking inside. Regardless, Sakura is still the best for me.

But there's got to be a better place to eat sushi in Mexicali now with all these Japanese restaurants open. Long ago I tried Uniko Sushi on Independencia and it was no good, since the sesame seeds on the rolls tasted more like bird seeds. Sushi Bar on Justo Sierra is good, but I like it more for the artsy ambience.

So anyone on the C.com eat sushi and if so, where do you recommend to go in Mexicali?

Spic-ole had recommended to me Sushi Villa Fontana in Mexicali and all I have to say is spic-ole has no taste, well maybe bad taste.

They don't really have sushi there, mainly rolls, and they taste like something you'd make at home in your first few attempts. The rice is all wrong here.

Nice place though, too bad the food wasn't to my liking.

When did I recommend this place? I've never even eaten there. I think you're getting your sources mixed up.

You specifically said, "That place is pretty good." when referring to Sushi VF, which was very surprising with you rating everything as "it sucks."

Wait, are you talking about the place in Justo Sierra? I've eaten there once, and it was ok.
