As I was reading the San Diego Union this morning, I was reading about the issue around using Christmas or Holiday? I really don't understand what the entire issue about using the word Christmas is? After all, that is what we celebrate, Christmas, Jesus' B-day. If there were no Jesus, there would be no Christmas or Holiday season as many people want to call it now. I really don't know what the issue is. I do say that if people don't want to celebrate Christmas, fine, don't!!! But let those of us who do want to celebrate Christmas and enjoy giving presents, eat some tamales, menudo, etc... do it without having to worry whether I have a Christmas tree or a "Holiday" tree.

The bottom line is that we should all just have a "MERRY CHRISTMAS" and forget about the whole "holiday" thing......

What about Hanukkah, which begins the evening of December 25th. I think that is the crux of the issue?

i guess it has to do with respect. if you were a christian (and a minority) and were living in a jewish or islamic community or country you probably wouldn't like to the greeted by a phrase that expresses something that has meaning only to the jew or the silamic and it has no meaning to you or is even disrespectful to you/your religion. so just do unto other what you would want them to do to you. it's very easy when you are a part of the mayority (christians [catholic and protestant]celebrate christmas) to just disregard the minorities. the hard part is to put yourself in their shoes.

I agree that we must be respectful to other religions, yet we don't change the name of their feasts or Holy Days, why then should we change ours? The other issue is that I think we no longer are about tolerance, but rather about indifference. We have really lost the meaning of what Christmas is. We are now think of Christmas as a time in which we buy gifts for others and others buy gifts for us.

I say we should stand up and celebrate Christmas for what it is, CHRISTMAS and not just a holiday......

Yeah, explain that to all your relatives when they realize there are no gifts to them from you. Let's see how quickly you become the least liked of the family. Or are you already that?

Holidays, especially Christmas, have been corporatized and commercialized by the American economy. It's no longer about the "thought that counts," but is now about how big and how pricey.

If everyone stops buying gifts for Christmas, the terrorists will win. So just play the game and quit being a cheapo bastardo by trying to bring back the "old values" of Xmas cause you don't wanna spent a buck on your mom.
