| Today I went to Wal-Mart with a friend who needed to buy some sharpies for his art class. We went to the register and the lady says, "oh i'm sorry, i can't sell this to you. You must be at least 18 years old to buy a marker"....I immediately start laughing and ask her why and she responds to me "because you can sniff them"...i think this is ridiculous. I wonder if this applies to all the stores?...I also went to Sol Market and they didn't sell me a lighter because i was under aged. When did this all happen? |

Unfortunately, this makes a lot of sense.
Remember when stores started asking for IDs when buying paint spray cans? Well, this is somewhat similar.
Although I'd think the reasoning behind the age limit would be more to prevent vandalism. It seems like it helped with cholos and taggers filling up the walls with graffiti. I don't know if the local swap meets applied the age limit for purchases... I'm pretty sure they did.
The truth is that many kids are out of ideas nowadays when it comes to entertaining themselves and those who do drugs start looking for cheap alternatives at getting high. Gas huffing, paint sniffing, glue sniffing, air duster inhaling (nitro)... it's all bad as it kills your brain cells quick.
The store clerk doesn't know you're buying it to just label your CDs or for art class, so they need to take all precautions to prevent any potential lawsuits.
What do you think a parent would do once they found their kid passed out on the bed with their nose all black, the marker stuck in a nostril and a Wal-Mart bag over their head?
Think about it. Think about it. |

You've got to when you sniff too much gold paint.
Actually, that's a lyric from some song I have no real recollection about. |

now that i think about it.. it is a good idea to have sharpies being bought by someone who is older... but i think that it shouldnt be the 18 year mark, i think they should have it up to 16 year olds or something... plus whom ever buys these thing can just ask an older brother or friend to get them the stuff...
but it is a start |
