Hey you DVD twits: Pause, review, get a life
Joel Stein

October 9, 2005

FINALLY, YOU realized how embarrassing it is. That your shelves and shelves of DVDs are the most expensive way you could possibly tell the world that you're a dork, other than collecting enough Hummel figurines to spell out the words "I'm a dork" on the sidewalk.

After conning people for years, studios are reporting lower than expected earnings this year because DVD sales are down. The main reason is because owning DVDs is incredibly stupid. And people start to get wise just about the time they fill a second wall with pure stupid.

I know. You're going to tell me that you own every DVD you have because you love to watch those films over and over. Right. You're spending Saturdays savoring the nuances of shoving the jockstrap on the Asian kid's head in "Revenge of the Nerds" for the fourth time. Even if that were true, at $20, you'd have to watch "Revenge of the Nerds" five times to make it more economical than renting it. If you watch any movie more than four times when you're more than 6 years old, you've either got Alzheimer's or are too embarrassed to buy new porn.

No, you have a DVD collection for the same reason suburban moms have wicker baskets, decorative blue cobalt and those neat bathroom collections of serotonin reuptake inhibitors. To have something to talk about. To brag. To establish your identity. DVDs have become the new books.

No one puts up a bookshelf because they believe that someday they'll have to quickly look something up. That's an awful lot of living room space to devote to the possibility that someday you're going to get in an argument with your spouse about whether the ending of "The Tempest" was stolen from Ovid. If you wanted to eat up wall space on argument avoiders, you'd just put up a huge wipe-board to record how many times a week you've had sex.

I went from vinyl to CDs and ipod, VHS to DVDs. When will this maddness end. Hell, I skipped the books on tape and thought I was smart and bought the books on CD. This article has hurt my fragile self-esteem. Surrender

I'm sorry you have to down on people who enjoy collecting DVD's the way you like to enjoy collecting the snot and loogies on your wall. I'm sorry you think, people who CAN AFFORD to buy DVD's for their pleasure and collection, are dorks? Who talks like that? Who has nothing else to do than to come up with something so petty to bitch about yet have time to look up stats? I guess now we know. I'm just as petty for even posting anything about this. Or allowing your comment to bother me. Fortunetly I CAN AFFORD to buy as many DVD's as I want, and watch them over and over. Que? te aguitas? Laughing

Hey Decrevi,
I've warned you about posting copyrighted information and now you've paid just one of the prices for doing so because you continue to not properly format and snippet someone else's copyright work.

You now have at least 2 Calecia.com members thinking you wrote this entire piece and they are lashing out at you for thinking you are referring to them as dorks.

Hopefully this is a lesson learned for you.

So please refrain for doing so, mainly because it's illegal.

And BTW, I don't buy DVDs, but only under special circumstances.

Dude, now you got me wondering. What IS the correct way of doing this?

And to keep on topic. No DVD's owned here. Once or twice is enough for me to watch a film, and the second time will be if I want to share the experience with someone I know will appreciate the film. There is so much more material out there to see, so little time. I'm also getting rid of my CD collection by the way... each CD for a dollar or two, really! [feel free to edit this if its against any Calecia.com advertising policy, my appologies if so]. In general, it just feels good to get rid of clutter.
Next thing on the list will be my hall closet, that shit's a mess!

Until we implement a better system, you can sell your crap on this thread.

Mr.elcrist, thanks. I again give a sincere mea culpa Doh! . I will be checking my old copy(or a students) of the MLA.It may help me with this issue since I am not all that acquianted with this format. I do not want the D.O.J. and the LA. Times after me (or Calecia members). Nope, I do not want any more bananas giving me the finger.
I may have to destroy my copied DVDs and CDs.

The problem I have with renting DVD's as opposed to buying them is that people are animals. At least 50 percent of the time that I rent a DVD anywhere (that's not a new release) I have to end up going back to the video rental store and returning it to get another copy.

What is wrong with people? Don't they know how to deal with technology? Do these people use DVD's as coasters after they watch them? Do they try to clean them with sand paper?

I just rented some DVD's yesterday. I've attempted to watch 4 of the 5 that I rented. So far, 3 out of the 4 don't play because they're too scratched to play. One of them even looked kind of melted. Don't video rental stores have any of those DVD repair devices? Don't they ever inspect their DVD's?

I have at least 30 DVD's and I plan to get more, and no, I don't watch them everyday, and I probably haven't seen most of them this year, but at least I know I can if I wanted to. DVD collections may be stupid to some people (yeah, I know the article wasn't written by Decrevi) but I'm gonna go watch my copy of Disorderlies. Why? Because I can, that's why.
