There was an article about how the district wants to give teachers a salary raise of 1.8 percent and the teachers union want 4 to 5 percent...
I say that they should give them a raise only if they meet the state standards... its a shame that not one of the schools in calexico made the state standard score of 800...
what do you guys think??? |

I think that if Calexico teachers want a raise, they should apply for administrator positions. |

No school in the Valley made the state standard score of 800. Most schools in California that do make that score are schools that have almost all Native English Language speakers.
Any CHS alumni knows this is not no where near the case in Calexico.
Check out this site so you can compare API scores from across the state: http://api.cde.ca.gov/ |

Spoken like a true champ, if you think it's so easy, you try it. It's not easy teaching these kids and teacher put in a lot of effort and work that goes unpaid. The teachers are great; trust me I know who they are. Kids today are tough to reach, no matter what grade you teach. Students simply don’t give a shit. Teachers have 24-30 students per class each them has an individual issue that one teacher cannot address alone. If anyone should be questioned it should be the state. There should be fewer students per class and better student assessment to assist the teacher in their teaching.
As far as the raise goes, the teachers were seeking a 1.8% raise that the district denied, because of "lack of funds". A few months later the administrators received a 5% raise, doesn't sound right. With all the work and effort that teacher put in a raise is well deserved. The state gave the district funds that would allow for teachers to receive a raise, which has never happened. The money is there and the teachers deserve it. The cost of living is going up and the teacher’s salary isn’t.
Seriously, unless you know what teachers go through you have no way opinion in the matter. Teacher is an unpaid profession and they deserve every cent they can get. Especially with the type of students and issues they have to deal with. |

Affective this year student will not be allowed to graduate if they don't learn the required material. If you are unaware students must pass a test before they receive a high school diploma. |

As I said earlier...if teachers want more pay apply for an administrator position.

The majority of professions in the Valley are underpaid. Probation Officers and Social Workers work with children with more problems than the majority of your students and are drastically underpaid. Computer guys in the Valley are severly underpaid. Fuck, even the majority of cops in the Valley only stay for a few years before leaving to better paying cities. The low pay has more to do with the Valley's job market than with job performance. The only jobs that overpay in the Valley seem to be IID and Corrections. |

teachers in the imperial valley are better paid than most other districts in the state... they are paid about the same as the LA unified School District and the cost of living in la is about twice as much as Calexico... you cant tell me that teachers are committed because every single time i pass through any school and its half an hour after they get out, the parking lot is completely desolate... There are only a few teachers who end up staying after school to help... you got to remember that everyone or mostly everyone in this website has gone through school... When I went to CHS I would always be there till an hour after school, and well most teacher just vanished right after school... Teachers should become more accountable for the failings of their students... and it shouldnt come up to a test at the end of high school to fail a student... teachers should really consider making their classes more college prep than just a simple course...
heck any kid that just sits in class can graduate these days... |

Let tell this, teachers cannot stay after school and tutor without an extended contract. You stay after school and correct papers or talk to students. If they want to tutor they must have a contract that states that they can stay after working hours. When a student needs tutoring they are sent to a classroom where a teacher is paid to tutor. Besides, some teachers are better at solving certain problems.
College prep? Are you kidding half these kids have trouble reading and you want to toss them into a college prep class. I agree some kids would benefit from a prep course, but most of them are so slow that they can't even take a core level course. |
