Why does Calexico have the one of the highest city sales tax rates in the state of California (2nd to San Francisco, but 1st in the Imperial County)?

I'm sure management claims it's because of all the shoppers from Mexico, but give me a break. When I purchase items online (because they're not available locally Fuck you!), I make sure to use my work's address to get that 0.50% sales tax break on my order.

Someone please provide a valid explaination.

I think Ataraxia summed it up best when she wrote:

I'm afraid these are my own stupid ideas not those of my professors. I am currently studying ancient art of China and Hellenistic Greece--not f--king poli sci. I don't believe that tax-cuts are the answer to anything, but I am moving to a socialist country and believe in the greater benefits of higher taxes. And I don't believe that an inheritence tax should be top prioty as so many new articles last week stated. What does it have to do with current issues? HOw can it benefit the poor more. Isn't it more likely that in the example given earlier that a poorer person (who doesn't live in Calexico where housing is cheap) will ended up with a pile of debts inherited from their parents rather than a house. Poor families are poor by definition and when they do have something it's great to get it and keep it in the family, but realistically, how often does this happen? Even in Calexico, how many old people die with their houses paid off? How many of them actually die owing stuff from the morgages they've taken out? People in such a situation would benefit more from having money spent on programs that could help people for one thing not be dependent on the odd chance they might get their parents house (assuming they don't have a number of competing siblings either). It would be better if their were more job programs, better education, and all that stuff than possibly someone might get a better deal on a house

The main reason that taxes are so high here is because we elected to pay more taxes to buy some vouchers to help save the Calexico Hospital! Even thought the hospital is no longer in operation, we are still paying for these vouchers!

By the way, why do we still have board of trustees for a non-existant hospital!

Abso-fuckin'-lutely correct.

I believe it's so the city can justify the continuation of the tax. Problem is, it has been made abundantly clear in the past that the Calexico Hospital will never open again. False hopes finds deep pockets.

Why do they keep paying a gardener to do the grounds at the hospital?

That's true, I think they have more than one though. I think he doubles as a security guard. I remember when I was on high school, I would walk home, and the hospital was along the way.

Sometimes me and my friends would stop and hang out there for a while, and the security guard would come out and give us shit until we left.

We never could figure out why they never wanted us near there. I think maybe the government is doing secret human experiments in there. It would explain a lot.
