Thanks for the stellar review. |
I have to add that sprint will merge with nextel so the reception in calexico will be so strong that cingular will not stand the chance!!!!! |
Yeah, but they're not going to merge for another year, or at least they said in their last press statement, and when that time occurs, their is no way to know what they will do. |
Sprint and Nextel use two completely different technologies for their radio service so it won't be feasible to do an actual technological merge. At least it won't be as "transparent" as the AT&T and Cingular merger. |

What I remember when i read that strory last year Sprint will take over NExtel and Sprint will have all the data of the nextel users.
I don't think they were going to merge it was a take over. |

Its a merge... thats why they are keeping their names.. the company will be called SprintNextel... its not like AT&T and Cingular where Cingular just bought the whole thing... |

What's the status on Cingular in Calexico?
The store has yet to open up and I'm unaware of any service/reception improvements.

BTW, I only ask because Apple announced their iPhone which will only be offered with Cingular service (GSM). |

Funny, I have been a Cingular (chingate) wireless user for 5 yrs...I used to get spotty reception when I drove in Calexico to visit my sister and brother (I now live in El Centro). Seems service has improved for me in the last 2 yrs or so....I can even make and receive calls a couple blocks into Mexicali nowadays w/o roaming fees. My brother cancelled his Cingular service a couple yrs. back because it did not work in Calexico...he ended up moving to El Centro anyways so now it's a moot point. just wanted to share my experience....not really for or againt Cingular, but I can understand people being pissed off paying a cancellation fee for a phone that does not work in Calexico...
Best Wishes,
Dave |

My Sprint contract is almost up, so I was going to ask how Cingular/AT&T service in Calexico is nowadays...

I have a Cingular Branded Treo 750 with a new AT&T sim card I have a problem choosing between GSM networks. I frequently travel to Yuma, AZ and Calexico, CA, and Nogalas, AZ. These are all border towns with Mexico. When I am near the border, a few miles or so, The ATT signal is "good", but the Telcel GSM (Mexico GSM Network) is better, so when I turn the phone on, it always aquires signal from the Telcel GSM towers first and will stay there until I drive far enough away from the border that I only am picking up ATT towers. The problem with this is, if I make or receive a call while the phone is on the Mexico network, I'll get charged $0.99/minute for internation roaming, plus internation taxes, so it works out to like $1.20/minute. I find NO way of selecting the ATT network instead. I just have to wait for the phone to change over. I know the ATT network exists in that location, because, if I drive away from the border, and finally get the phone to switch to ATT, then I drive back to the border, the phone remains on the ATT network and networ switches back to Mexico (Unless I power the phone off and back on again). This problem occurs when I fly into one of these places, step off the plane, and turn my phone on, and it starts searching right away. Sometimes it picks up ATT right away, But most (95%) of the time just picks up the Mexico towers. Sometimes I may stay in that locations for a few hours before going somewhere else, so I cannot make any Non-roaming calls while there waiting. I want to be able to force the phone to the AT&T network; Any idea of how to hack WM6, or make a registry change, or install any certain software that would give me the ability to select which GSM network I'm connected to. I remember my Moto Razer or Ericcson T810i had the option to select GSM network, and you could pick from a list. I've tried powering the phone off, and rebooting, etc., it always connects to the Mexico network first.
Any ideas?
Thanks |
