Anti-skateboarder lumps for your precious concrete
Under the rallying cry, "What is deemed by skaters and bikers as 'creative expression' is costing you money," SkateStoppers sells bolt-on anti-skateboarding lumps that cause skaters trying to grind down your bench-edge, concrete shelf, or staircase to fall over and break their heads. The FAQ http://skatestoppers.com/FAQ.htm is full of dry stats about what happens to your marble floors when skaters abuse it, but no rebuttal about the chaos these little babies sow among unsuspecting skaters. They remind me of the thin, anti-pigeon spikes you see on top of signs and ledges in train stations.

As a ex-skateboarder (actually, I'm on hiatus due to a broken bearing after coming back from retirement), I am on both sides of the fence on this issue.

1) The skater in me thinks it's wrong for people to put up these "lumps" because it limits the skate spots in the area you live.

2) The grown-up in me wants to preserve the fine architectural structures that man has created.

I used to grind and railslide on curbs and edges and I took note of the damage that I caused on the concrete (and other materials). It didn't look nice afterwards, but felt that I had to be one with the curb, thus grind it. Eventually, the edge was broken up and of no more use to me/us, so we'd move on. We had our fun, but now the former skate spot was an eyesore. This was/is not good.

These "skatestoppers" will put an end to much of the grinding if they are installed, but I believe that the true skater is an ever evolving being who will adapt to these lumps. New tricks will be invented due to their adoption in society and commercial-driven and concrete slab preserving entities will research and develop new ideas to prevent a skateboarder from their goal to grind the longest curb.

i first saw those things at a fansy high school in La Jolla, and i tought maybe only rich schools had them, but CHS got some too, poor skaters
