Group Decries Urban Outfitters T-Shirt
Source: Associated Press

The Anti-Defamation League has asked retailer Urban Outfitters to stop selling a T-shirt that reads: "New Mexico, Cleaner than Regular Mexico."

"This is saying that the country of Mexico is a dirty place," said Barry Morrison, regional director of the civil rights group. "Dirty can be interpreted figuratively and literally."

The group wants the Philadelphia-based retailer to get rid of all its inventory.

Urban Outfitters did not immediately return calls for comment Friday. The retailer, which targets 18- to 30-year-olds, has run into similar controversy before.

Meh.

Yet no one is complaining about that retard Carlos from Comedy Central's Mind of Mencia with him calling all Mexicans (and Latinos) beaners and wetbacks.

Simply pathetic.

Mencia is "latino" so he is calling himself a wetback. He is also a comedian, a good one or bad one who cares? if he is calling all Mexicans beaners and wetbacks in his show well that is his show I guess he has the right to do it. If I don't like it or if a get offended I have the right to watch something else, for example I can watch Chris Rock calling all blacks niggers. what happen if I start writting in Spanish right now, well some of you guys are going to start telling me that this is an English site, that if I want to write in Spanish go to chicali.com. If I ask why, you are going to tell me that you all agree that all of us must write in English and that is one of the rules. and I guess you guys are rigth if i don't like it i have the rigth to watch someting else. If one of you guys did not understand what i was trying to say just tell me i write way better in spanish.

The difference is that black people call each other niggers and have done so for a long time. It's commonplace

"Latinos" have not historically called each other wetbacks. That's what makes it seem strange, and offensive to some. I personally think that Mencia over does it and it's annoying. It's the only thing he does, or at least that I've seen from one episode.

And yes, people can watch something else, but do you really want the word wetback to become as common as nigger? Even though the word nigger is pretty common, it's still not right to say it. It's offensive. Black people who call each other niggers set the race back. No respectable black man calls another black man a nigger, in the form of a salutation, at least.

I,m not saying that it is all right to call Mexicans wetbacks. All I'm saying is that if he wants to call them it is up to him. I know that i'm not going to get offended. There is a Mexican dicho. "toma las cosas de la persona que biene" Personally I don't think that we are going to call all Mexicans wetbacks just because Mencia is calling them

So should Mencia be allowed to bring back a stereotype that has been dormant for so long just so he could get paid?

Spic-ole brought some interesting points about the differences the use of nigger and wetback.

WETBACK is that the image middle America should see of the Latino in the US?

The answer is clearly No.

I've seen one episode and in one skit he did use the term wetback appropriately. He made a white guy come out and say wetback. That was pretty cool. So in that context it was alright, but it would be best if he limits his use of this highly offensive term.

One thing is that your buddy calls you a wetback, but its total different when the word is use with malice. If you have never been called a wetback by a white person you have no idea how much one word can anger you.
