Someone with the same last name recently asked where the town of Niland got it's name from. I have no clue whatsoever. I've just been there a couple times and it resembles a desert beach town.
Does anyone know where the name came from or have at least some interesting stories from there? |

This is strictly a guess, but by the name of the city and the name of the streets and the location, it has to do with a fixation on Egypt.
Niland is a permutation of the Nile. A number of streets in the city have names like Luxor and other weird handles straight out of Egypt. The location of the city makes sense for this too, because Niland isn't too far from the Salton Sea anda Salton Sea Delta (Nile Delta).
Like I said. This is all just an educated guess. |

That's a very good educated guess. I had no idea some of the street names had anything to do with Egypt, since I never even noticed them the two times I'd been there. In fact, I preferred to call this town Napalm instead of Niland because it sadly resembles a post-apocalyptic site. I know this is cruel, but that's the image I got from just passing through. I'm certain that there are many great citizens of this town that I just pissed off. I'm sorry about that.
Niland should maybe renovate itself into a themed city where they can build pyramids and write hieroglyphics all across town. They could easily accomplish this by proposing a casino to be built and this could maybe be tied into the re-resorting of the Salton Sea.
Now a place about Niland that really intrigues me is its neighboring RV park named Slab City. This place is truly unique all in itself, ala Mad Max. We'll need go camp out someday and take in the atmosphere.

the slabs, many moons ago I worked in the area providing medical care and let me tell you that there are some of the most pecular people that I have come across in my short life. I remember an old lady named dirty mary who would refuse to leave her hut in the middle of the desert to get medical help because her son had "needs" you know what type of needs I am talking about. The son was a older slightly retarded man and mary would provide the services he needed. Plus I have many more stories from the area, there are alot of scrappers at the Slabs also. cant forget Salvation Mountain.
Check this page out, gives you a small look at the slabs:
