1. Chicano is anything you want it to be from a social, economic, political form to an ethnicity, class, and along cultural lines. It originated as a label relating to ethnic Mexicans living in the Southwest.
2. You have one view of what Chicano/a is about. Yes, Chicanos of back in the movement of late 60's and early 70's had their ideals of what the label was all about. They transformed the label from a negative (the dirty, lazy mexican Chicano of the 1920's) into a positive one of pride and culture just live the negro to a black. We are not living in the 1960's anymore. Chicano/a identity has evolved and Chican@ youth take up the label as a form of identity as they see fit.
"I dont think true Chicanos listen to Chicano rap" agreed, rap didnt exist in their days. They listen to EL Chicano, Tierra, War, Malo, etc. It has evolved.
just like blacks didnt see any changes to their status in US society we saw the likes of gangster rap Niggers with Attitudes (NWA) emerge outta the streets. Chicanos dont see much changes to their status and still experience the same situation as their relatives who fought back during the height of the movement. Nothing changes so now some are straight up and say fuck the system.

Ive' heard a lot.
However, I do not disagree with their music.....why?
These people are "ENTERTAINERS" they tell "STORIES".
Things like these might actually happen in real life, it doesnt make me want to eat a baby.
We are all adults and in controll of our lives, If a minor is influeced by music to shoot a school in a black trenchcoat, it is not the youngsters fault or the music it is adult neglegance. |
for once i agree with you...most of the time, music is about telling a story...when it comes to rap/hip-hop, many people are misled and are wrong by using the word "glorify"...rappers dont glorify thug life or street life or the life they lead...they simply paint the type of picture that they've been seeing, or better yet, tell you about the life they led/lead....i've never heard a rap song that says, "i gangbang, so i hope all you youngsterts that are listening do the same thang...."
matter of fact, a lot of todays entertainers are lettin all youngsters know that its not a lifestyle worth glorifying....
either way, chicano rap is still garbage.... |

It has evolved, however, not progressively. It's now lazy, dirty Chicanos of the 21st century.
