The (unofficial) results are in and the majority of those who voted in the city of Calexico's special election for Measure N have stated they want a casino to be built inside city limits. 56% of Calexico voters chose "Yes" in favor of city negotiations with the Manzanita and Viejas Indian tribes which could allow an off-reservation casino to be constructed. With over 2,000 slot machines, the casino is set to become the Calexico's largest employer with an estimated 2,400 jobs.

While almost 44% of voters chose "No" on the casino project, it is not enough to put a halt to the talks between Calexico and the tribes. Approximately 27% of registered voters turned out to make their choice, which is possibly one of the lowest turn outs in election history.

Below you'll find the final (unofficial) results for this special election:

Polling places reported
17/17 (100%)

Yes
1,852 (56.1%)

No
1,452 (43.9%)

Total votes
3,304/12,056 (27.4%)

More unofficial results:

Heard this morning on Q96, 15 out of 17 voting precincts reported the following:

Yes: 1,700
No: 1,400

This included the absentee ballots. When do official results come out?

A rather slim victory considering that the proponets had spent an inordinate amount of money with consultants, mailing, salaries, freebies, tv/radio ads,Sacramento phone lobbyists, parties and City Hall did not have an opposing view on the ballot. Even the United Farm Workers took money from the Indios.

How much did they spend?

I'm assuming later today, once they are approved (by the state).

These results and those in this other Calexico casino discussion are direct from the Imperial County Registrar of Voters. They were practically posted moments after being counted and verified.

Here are the special election results as of 06/07/05 10:47 PM:

And the opponents appeared to have had a lot of support from faith-based organizations and individuals. This may not appear to be much, but when you're already established in Calexico and many residents already "respect" these entities, they have major influence over their own decisions in life.

When a mayor, priest/pastor, or another high profile public individual expresses their opinion, many will base their own around the feeling they know what's best for them.

I voted "Yes." I did not base my decision on these individuals, but in fact on the casino discussions that occurred on Calecia.com. They were quite educational and much more helpful than the one-sided comments coming from each side. I didn't buy into any of the marketing nonsense coming from them.

The reality, I felt, was that the city of Calexico is way behind in comparison to other international border cities that have neighboring metropolises in excess of 1,000,000 citizens. Calexico has approximately 30,000 citizens, so the ratio is way off. Calexico will not be a small town forever and it cannot continue to pretend to be. This city needs to grow and compete with Mexicali. It also needs to cater to Mexicali and it needs to cater to me.

Does anyone know who will be involved in the discussions/agreements between the city and the tribe? If it is the city council members We’re doomed. Considering the precedent of the U.S Data and Calexico Housing Situations the agreement between these two entities is on a road to fraud/failure. It would be good if a group of caleciano citizens were involved in the discussions. ONLY IF these citizens were not involved with the “CALEXICO POLITICA”.

With Measure N passing, the next step to be taken is a watchgroup to be created that would monitor these negotiations. Will these negotiations be private? I sure hope not, as they shouldn't be.

I believe the casino in Calexico is good for us. Now as responsible Calexico residents, we need to certify that those involved in these casino talks are in fact looking out for the best interest of the community. We cannot let something sneak by us.

For those who voted against Measure N, you need to be involved as well (obviously). It's not time to take sides anymore. If you respect the election process, then accept the result and now assure that Calexico doesn't get screwed once more.

Calexico needs to get the most out of this deal as possible, since the Indian tribes are definitely going to be profitting from this investment.

I hope they have the Wheel of Furtune machine. I played that a few times the last time I was in Vegas and I was hooked.

What else, but the obvious?

I've never been waited on by her, but from the stories I've heard at TI, she'd drop the quality of her service in a heart beat because of the shitty tips she'd get here.
