A 14 year old student named Christian Perez from Calipatria is attending the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals in Washington, D.C. this month. Earlier she won the first Imperial Valley Scripps Spelling Bee. She's also blind.

This morning she was featured on The Early Show on CBS, which the video segment is currently available online for viewing.

Last year a child fainted during the competition and a steroid scandal tarnished the innocense of this sport. This year we can only hope for the best as ESPN will be televising the competition in its entirety.

Good luck Christian.

I think there are 300 contestants from around the nation. I don't know how many actually competed in the regionals, but 300 is an extremely small number when you consider all the 14 year old students in the US even though a small percentage of students only participate in each school.

I wonder if she has some type of advantage because of her blindness? Maybe the ability to remember a little better than others, considering one of her senses is completely "turned off."

I had seen a small article in the IV Press and I though, good luck to this kid. The article made no mention that she was blind, but now I think she is a greater achiever. Good Luck!!

Good luck to this girl...

But honestly, is it really that big a deal that she's a blind speller? I'd be more impressed if she was a blind basketball player.

...hell, even a blind fry cook would be more impressive than a blind speller!

Spelling is visual. Just like reading. That's a pretty big handicap.

She didn't end up qualifying to Round Three which according to her blog on the IV Press she mispelled the word "pyrogeometer."

The correct spelling was actually:

pyrgeometer
A pyrgeometer is a radiometer that is sensitive to broadband thermal irradiance, in the spectral range from approximately 3.5 to 50 micrometers.

Which I had no clue.

Ironically, the second to the last line has the word "with" mispelled as "wiht." I'm sure she wasn't typing this up and now I feel like a prick for even bringing it to your attention.

She reads braile...that's not visual.
