When one think of a cats in Mexicali, they usually think of tacos in funny way. I do and I'm sure I've unexpectedly eaten one. One would also think that this could possibly be why Mexicali doesn't seem to have a very large population of stray cats roaming the alleys. Maybe it's the large stray dog population that's killing them off?
Well it turns out that for more than 20 years a company named Preparation of Animals Material for Scholarly Study (PARMEESA) based out of Los Mochis has been supplying dead cats to American biological supply companies and in turn some students have dissected them in class. In 1994 an undercover investigation was done by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and it was found that PARMEESA was soliciting children with the payment of $1 for each cat they provided them with. It was also discovered that the cats were being drowned and beaten instead of them being euthanized for their educational use.
Now this report was filed more than 10 years ago, so it is very likely that this type of animal cruelty is no longer existent or has at least diminished greatly. A recent news article from a North Dakota newspaper stated that their students were not using animals supplied from a company with ties to PARMEESA. One can only hope if any of our local schools are dissecting larger animals, that they could verify this as well.
So if turns out this is no longer a problem, what is the cause of the low stray cat population in Mexicali? I really can't remember there being many cats wandering the streets when I've driven around. Lots of dogs, but not many cats. Can it be that stray cats are not a problem in Mex or is it that some taco stands are actually selling them to us for $1 a piece? |

| I guess I have to come clean. The reason there is a shortage of cats is because of my illegal company that Ive been running for the last 10 years or so. Every other night or so, i pay a group of men supplied with items used for catching animals, as well as trucks to where they can be put in. These men capture the cats, and bring them to TJ, where we sedate them, skin them cut them up and freeze them for meat packing. They arent being used for tacos, its the chinese food my friend. yup, the chao mein is cats, the BBQ pork is cats, all of it. Its a good buisness, the taco venders arent really too pleased with my catmeat prices, but they to buy my rat meat, which is a little more affordable. But thats another topic. Anyhow, yes, the catmeat is distributed througout the entire baja location, and it will continue to prosper for years to come, so yes enjoy your grade F catmeat. |
