Oscar Goes to Spanish Language Song
Source: AP

LOS ANGELES - "Al otro lado del rio" (On the Other Side of the River), from "The Motorcycle Diaries" took best original song at the Oscars Sunday night, marking the first time a Spanish song has won the award.

Uruguayan singer and songwriter Jorge Drexler eschewed the traditional acceptance speech and instead sang two verses of his song.

"Thank you, gracias, ciao!" he said before leaving the stage.

The move was seen as a symbolic gesture to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which refused to let Drexler perform the song he wrote and sang for the film, opting instead for the high wattage of Antonio Banderas and Carlos Santana.

What are your thoughts on Uruguayan singer and songwriter Jorge Drexler being snubbed at the Oscars only to have Antonia Banderas and Carlos Santana perform his own song in an attempt for higher ratings?

Apparently Gael Garcia Bernal split when he found out this happened and was a no show for the movie awards.

Yeah I heard that Gael Garcia boycotted the event in support of that uruguayan dude, that is an awsome thing he did. He let his mexican spirit show and didn't let all that glamour, fame, and public notoriety interfere with his decision of doing what was right. Bien por ti Gael !!!

Yeah, good for him, but I doubt anyone in "Hollywood" really noticed or cared. Not that it really matters since most of the movies he has a role in are Latin or Spanish.

I think he really showed his Mexican spirit when he placed his head between a naked man's thighs and also added moisture to his own a-hole for easy entry in La Mala Educacion.

If Gael goes or boycotts the event is not a big deal. He has said no to Hollywood many times so this act is nothing eventhough Gael is the Top Latino in Hollywood without being in Hollywood

I will think of this every time I see you at a Mexico soccer game or wearing a mexico shirt. This is the funny thing I have heard on this site for a while.

Gael Who?

That guy may be the biggest movie star in Mexico (He's probably starred in 14 of Mexico's 15 movies produced in the past ten years), but he's got absolutely no pull in Hollywood.

What's the biggest thing he's done in the US? Some Levi's commercial?

That's Hollywood for you. It's all about ratings unfortunately..and sometimes being politically Correct.
I'm glad to know that Gael, boycotted it, and hopefully Santana would have done the same had he known Drexler was denied.

I think i see Beyonce in the same light as i see J-Ho now.... Man, Why they had beyonce sing every freakin' song...is beyond me...well not really.
The Academy is nothing but a Superbowl. I watch it for the few films I root for in Hollywood and Cris Rock, but for the most part its all a show.
Some say that being 'Latino' is 'hot' right now in Hollywood, but its more like being 'salma' or 'banderas' is hot.

This month, the SD Latino FilmFestival will be happening...where they'll be honoring folks like Danny Trejo (http://www.sdlatinofilm.com/Tributes/tributesDanny.html).
Check it out if your in town.
