We've beat this topic to death, but it just keeps coming back... I feel that we need to get to discussing the basics of tipping. We think we know how much to tip, but do we know when exactly to do it?

It seems like waiters/waitresses expect to receive a tip in every restaurant they work for. If they serve you, you must tip them, regardless of you ordering at the register or at your table. I think we need to draw the line somewhere.

It's happened plenty of times that I've ordered food at the register and when I receive my receipt there is a line to include the tip. This is an awkward situation as the one taking your order might just end up being the one who prepared your meal. I feel impelled to add something otherwise my food will be "mishandled." I don't believe in tipping for takeout, but if I'm going to sit down and eat my food there then I need to protect myself.

So I order my food at the register and now I sit at the table waiting for it to be made. My order isn't called out, but here comes a waiter who brings it over and occasionally checks up on me. I don't consider that full service, so I don't expect to tip at full value. So how much do I tip? Half sounds good to me.

If you want my money then you take my order at the table, bitch.

I never tip if I order at the register. The "tip line" is automatically printed on the reciept; it doesn't mean that you have to fill it out.

Well Mr. Moneybags, I don't know about you, but I believe the vast majority of us here would go broke if we went and paid $20 for our daily lunch.
