| U.S. Visit is already in effect at the Calexico Ports of Entry and only affects people with Border Crossing Cards that want to solicit I-94's or "permisos" as they are commonly referred to, which allow them to go farther than 25 miles from the border. So if they want to visit Disneyland or anywhere else they have to apply for the permit. There is a separate line for "permisos" which is formed at the windows on your left hand side as you cross on foot. |

Expansion of SENTRI program is under way
By MARC SCHANZ, Staff Writer
CALEXICO — After several starts, promises and bureaucratic snags, the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection announced Monday that expansion of the long-awaited SENTRI lane program is beginning this week.
Improvements to ports in San Diego and Imperial County are slated over the next two months, according to an official customs release Monday. Crews will be surveying the location of the downtown Calexico ports' new lane before construction.
Customs officials met with Calexico City Council members and local business owners in April to discuss the long-awaited express lane program.
"It's good news, for sure," said councilman John Renison, who helped assemble the April summit. "I think we all got things moving."
Improvements are slated for the San Diego area first, according to customs officials.
Starting at the ports of San Ysidro and Otay Mesa, where the two Secure Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection lanes exist on the California border, additional radio frequency equipment will be installed and two additional lanes will be added to the program, according to Customs and Border Protection spokesman Vince Bond.
Cars are equipped with radio transmitters that are affixed to windshields, allowing customs inspectors to pull up a detailed computer profile of each border-crosser as they pass through inspection. Program participants are screened in advance of acceptance to the program, which has over 60,000 participants in the San Diego-Tijuana region, according to Adele Fasano, field operations director for CBP's San Diego region.
The transmitters are being phased out in favor of new identification cards equipped with radio frequency chips, however, Fasano added.
After work on the San Diego County ports are completed, the Calexico lane will be assessed for work such as wiring, conduit and control features for port operation, according to Bond. |

Calexico SENTRI lane enrollment center now open
Source: Imperial Valley Daily
United States Customs and Border Protection opened enrollment for the Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection (SENTRI) program at the Calexico East port of entry on Thursday. Border crossers from Mexicali to Calexico can apply for SENTRI lane usage, which after passing an extensive background check and paying a $129 fee, will decrease their border wait times for 2 years.

If you're living in Mexicali and working in the Imperial Valley, $129 USD is not bad at all for 2 years. |
