I'm not a big fan of tequila. Tequila shots, tequila flavored beer or even tequila popsicles simply don't do it for me. Cheap or expensive bottles, it doesn't really matter.
So how about some flavored tequila?
Apparently Mexico's Tequila Regulatory Council is thinking about legalizing the flavoring of its national alcoholic drink, tequila. Taste tests in the United States reportedly show that women will dig it, while most Mexicans will stay true to the original.
Mexico appears to know that they won't be able to prevent the artificial flavoring, plus there's probably a lot of money to be made from this. It's hard to stay true to the original. If 7-Up couldn't resist, then who out there can?
Late last year, South Africa began producing a tequila clone in an attempt to meet the global demands of alcoholics everywhere. Mexico was pissed, but it was completely legal as long as the drink didn't bear the same name.
Now with the ever increasing popularity of tequila, what can be expected in the future? The answer seems obvious: Tequilandia. |

Well if it sells I say it's OK. Hey, there is much need for ANY type of industrial development in Mexico. The town of Tequila is enjoying the favorable trend world-wide, and with a registered "denominacion de origen" why shouldn't Mexico enjoy the wave? Faithful tequila lovers..those who have been enjoying it moderately for years (and I'm not talking shot after shot of Jose Cuervo, that's for the tourists) will continue to be a market for high quality tequila, those who hold a good 'reposado' in as high esteem as an oaky-smoked cognac or their favorite brandy.
Salud!!
Keep it artesan, original is Mexican, say no to "Temequila." |
