A lot of people would like for there to be a bookstore here in the Valley. But honestly, when was the last time any of you bought a book? Not read a book, bought it.

College material, cereal box information, that doesn't count. I mean, when was the last time you went to a book store, or went online, and purchased a book?

A lot of people try to pull the, "If there was a book store here, I would buy more books and read them." But come on, how many of you still know where your library cards are? Those books you can read for free. How many people are really going to drop 20+ bucks every week, or month, or whatever to purchase a book?

While it would be nice to have a book store, it doesn't seem very likely.

However, if so many of you are so adament about having a Barnes and Noble, etc, then why don't you all throw your pennies together and open one up.

Hopefully I'm wrong about this and I'm just not giving the Valley enough credit.

There is in fact a bookstore in the imperial valley. There is a book store in El Centro called 5th Avenue Books. Its on West main street. As you might see in the poll I have bought things in that book store within a month. I have bought not one, not two but THREE books in that store and the newspaper.

I bought Two books from Bill O'Reilly called The O Reilly Factor and Those Who Trasspass

I also bought something called the Science of Superman

I go there often because I like to know what is new and becuause there is a girl there that im intrested in.

Want a book Spic..go to fifth avenue book in Main Street in El Centro tha store in on the near the Ultimate Salon and KUBO 88.7fm...in front of KYMA TV

No so fast RadioDude!!
The fifth ave bookstore closed a while back and it was located on the corner of Main St. and Fifth Ave hence the name.
I believe the store you are talking about is Book Nook, their selection is very limited unless you're looking for a used paperback.
I just bought "Dude, where's my country" by Michael Moore at Costco.
I believe a book store would be good. I hope the open one up at the new mall.

Yes there are book stores here in the Valley. But most of the books that you find in these book stores are things like, The O Reilly Factor . What I mean by that are, mainstream books. And a select few too.

The Book Nook, if I'm not mistaken, is mostly a book for teachers to go and buy their resources. I've never really seen a decent book selection there.

The other book store, which has yet to be decided on, is decent at best.

My point is, a major book store like Barnes & Noble would be a little difficult to keep from failing. Too much variety. Which is usually good, but here in the Valley, the best selling book stores are the Christian book stores. They fill a much needed niche here. The other book stores have survived because they fill other niches.

Barnes & Noble is too big. There would always be a lot of leftovers, and eventually, it would have to become another niche book store to survive and would consequently kill off the local competitors because they would be able to offer books at a better deal.

Once again, I hope I am wrong.

A major book store in the Imperial Valley may not become the most successful business in this county, but it would most likely be successful. The people you know may not buy a book a month, but when you put together over 100,000 residents of the Imperial Valley along with possibly 100,000 more from the Mexicali Valley, these potential customers could very much sustain this store.

The key is variety. Whether it's buying a book on automobiles, biographies, cats, dogs, the environment, fiction, gardening, home improvement, inventions, Java, kites, landscaping, motherhood, non-fiction, outdoors, politics, quantum physics, relationships, sports, travel, the universe, volcanoes, whales, Malcom X, Yugoslavia, or zippity doo dah, there are enough people with interests to keep it open.

Don't forget all the children's books as well as a much larger variety of magazines than the El Centro porn zine shop.

People buy books regardless of reading them or just having them out for display.

Throw in a coffee shop and you also have a new hang out for many.

The prices at these major retail book stores are not cheap. They are in fact usually MSRP. You could very much go out and buy a book on an online store for much cheaper, but when you factor in tax, shipping and the delivery time, you are most likely not interested in making the purchase. I know this is usually the case for me.

Anyway, why are we discussing this? There are no plans for a Borders, Barnes & Noble or any other major book shop to be at the new shopping mall.

I agree with both of you, we don't need yet another place to dump our money in... stop giving tax breaks to big companies like Barnes and Noble and start putting it into building better public libraries.

and furthermore, do you really think that a cup of Starbucks and some Book of the Month on Laureate Neruda would make you look cool, or perhaps, intelligent? Man... image is everything now a days...
