Em.. well i used to eat.. in fact those are some of my fondest memories, eating out... especially lunch... my best friend and I who's name Maria shall remain nameless, used to have lunch in Calecia all the time... well since we were on 5th street and at first we didn't have a car, (then we got our daewoos) we went to D'POly's... the food was delicious but they were always short on waitresses at lunch time so we started having to call early and order our food, that was if we actually talked about lunch before lunch time, then they opened DISFRUTALOW and then we became fruit junkies, except that DISFRUTALOW is pretty costy even for me that I was a full time worker... then I know a couple of cops that loved going to the buffet at Hollies, or also known as Friendship... this was of course before they opened, China Buffet, up by walmart on cole road... HOwever, we'd still rather go to FRIENDSHIP because it just took too long to get to china buffet from 5th street and it would "EAT UP" our lunch hour... we'd barely get like 15 minutes to eat... and then again it was a buffet.. On special ocassions when we were really hungry and had money i'm talking about like twice in six months, we'd go to Hometown buffet.. at one point though we went like 4 times in one week, then we realized whoa, we're gonna end up looking like some of the fatties that are up in here... then the fire department girls would invite over the river and across to the airport in calexico, to eat at the pit stop they got there, what's it called, OH ROSAS, and well the food was very pricey, the wait was long, and the jamaica was colder than any restaurant in town... then there is guadalajaras, i really don't like their chairs, they're very akward, and the restaurant is on 2nd street, too close to the border, and right across the street from that gas station with the crack heads that wash cars for cash.. it's kind of a scary place to park you car... then to cross 111 highway at high noon just isn't a smart idea, so we'd rather go to disfrutalow, oh i forgot, burgers & beer, but there we'd go for the fish tacos, man they are good, the burgers are good, but they also take a while to make the meal, sometimes, the owner is nice, but you pay for the good service in the meal ticket... anyway, then there is temptations, we'd go there when we were tired of everything else, and just wanted a deli sandwich, that was still within the area between 111, andrade, and the 98 highway, those are the places that me and maria liked the best... oh but the firegirl loved dennies for dinner, so we'd go there alot for that, then my cousin the teacher loves CARROWS, we cant forget them... they have the great shrimp skampy, this is all pre APPLEBEES, which has now become like the it place to be seen and the worst place to be seen if you're cheating on your mate... you will bump into everybody at applebees, you can never go there scroungy, you're bound to see someone... it's like the "best bar in town" and next to the movies, so after you check out a movie, its customary to hit applebees, but the whole calexico culture should change soon and has been changing with the opening of target, and sonic in el centro, then there is the new starbucks, that might just close down the across the street donut shop that has been there forever next to jc pennys, then they're making the mall that should open this fall, which will also have a starbucks, so i don't know, calexicans with money might tend to take the trip to the mall for fun, but not for lunch but maybe after six because EVERYTHING is closed in calexico after 5pm almost... so hopefully that will change things... i mean the calexico stores cater to the mexicans mostly but the mexican americans, definitely, if they have the money go to el centro for fun...
sometimes it would be months before i crossed the border and i had plenty of fun on this side of the border...
and plenty to eat...
then if you're really melancholic over the real mexican tacos there is Tacos Yubby and ask for the papa yubby that's ok...
in mexcali,
but that's a whole nother story, mexicali has a lot too offer, but almost as much as Calecia...

Roxies is on San Jose Street in Balboa Park. It's a junky little place but every time I've been, there are neighborhood people waiting for their sandwiches.
I also love hot pastrami sandwiches but not every place has them. I.B.'s Hoagies has a really good one and they also have a really good pepperoni cheesesteak. The sandwich by which I compare all sandwich shops is the salami sandwich.
Oh and fuck all those people who said that Blondies sucks. BLONDIES RULES!! Escape from NY pizza is whack. The pizza there tasted like currogated cardboard soaked in grease. |
