"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Supreme Court Decides Pledge Case on Technicality
Source: Reuters

The ruling by the justices was based on the technicality that Newdow could not bring the case before the court because he did not have legal control over his daughter, on whose behalf he was arguing.

In the state of California, the law requires that the pledge of allegiance be recited every day in public elementary schools. With the students being underage and most like not capable of making all of their own decisions in society, should the words "under God" be required to be muttered by children, along with the rest of the pledge?

I'll admit, I was too young to even pay attention and/or care about the meaning of this pledge. Everyone had to stand up, place their hand over their heart and recite the words while facing the American flag. I never really had a second thought about it and I definitely never even cared about the words in it. I just felt as if I had to do it.

I personally think the words "under God" should be removed from the pledge of allegiance, currency and another other government issued products and services. Regardless of my religious belief (or lack of), religion should not be a part of the government and it definitely shouldn't be instilled in the everyday lives of children by them.

This is the parents' job.

What are your thoughts?

yeah, i agree. i didn't pay too much attention to what the pledge stood for. i just memorized the lines and splurted them out every morning.

and god has no reason to be in our government. that's just obvious. damnit.

I agree, I think those words should be taken out of the Pledge of Allegiance. That judge who installed the monument of the Ten Commandments overnight should be fired. But trying to remove any reference to God from abolutely everything related to government would be almost impossible.

If our currency were to de redesigned in the near future then it might be okay remove those references but imagine all the confusion it would cause- not only in the U.S. but all over the world. It might be best to just leave well enough alone, that is, until the need for currency (paper and coin) becomes obsolete.

I believe this is possible. If I remember my history correctly, it was Abraham Lincoln that put "In God We Trust" on all forms of currency during the civil war.

I paid attention to what was being said in the pledge especially when I heard this;

I pledge allegiance to the flag, Micheal Jackson is a fag, Pepsi cola burnt his butt, now he's drinking 7 up

I can't remember my 4th grade rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance.

You may be correct, but there weren't 275 million Americans in the Union back then.

Why would removing references to God from money cause confusion?

It isn't the act of removing references to god specifically that would cause confusion. It is changing the currency period. Remember a few years ago when the $100 bills were changed to have the big head shown? People everywhere worldwide and in the nation ran to the banks because they thought their old $100 bills would be worthless. Why do you think they have been making small changes to the bills we carry little by little and sending them out in waves?

They could use this same approach to remove any religious references. The confusion with the "older" bills becoming worthless was out of stupidity, while the confusion with removing God from the currency is out of belief.

BTW, do you think that if the reference to God would be removed from currency, the religious right would begin collecting older currency? What would this do to our current bustling economy? It would destroy it, so we can not allow a change... ever.

EOT.
