Has anyone ever purchased an extended warranty for their automobile? Does it make a diiference if it is dealer offered or from a private company? I am trying to decide whether I want to buy a dealer offered extended warranty that would cover everyting from wipers to the electrical system. It seems like a good deal but then the nagging question is always there, "What if nothing ever happens to the friggin' car?"
There are options to pay different amounts of deductibles and different mileage/year combinations. The current warranty covers everything for 4yrs/50k miles. The four years will expire before I even reach 50K miles because the car is only used on the weekends, so getting a 7yr/Lower mileage combo would work better.
I ask the members of C.com to voice their opinions, experiences and concerns to help me make a decision. |

Yes, definitely get the extended warranty.
When I bought my car it came with a 3 year warranty from another company, not the dealer, and I did have the need to use it about 3-4 months ago. My motor had a leak and I took it to Direct Auto and they said it was the head gaskets and charged me ove 2,000 (head gaskets aren't covered under most warranties), they fixed it and the next day I noticed that it was still leaking. I took it back and after another month or so they finally found what it was and it was a crack in the engine block, they fixed it and since the block was covered, they had to pay me back my 2,000 I had payed at the beginning, cause they misdiagnosed it. I would have been out over 2,000 if I did not have the warranty, so yeah go ahead and get it, you never know. |

Man, if you think the dealership are assholes about fixing stuff off waranty, you should see them work off an extended warranty.
I've taken my car twice to get the same thing fixed, twice they charged me, twice they told me nothing was wrong with the car. I guess leaking power-steering fluid is normal. |

You got to protect your investment. It's like buying a 20 pack and not buying a bag of ice if your going to be drinking outside. It's a given.
What I notice from the Valley is that most shops suck major ass. I took in my ride after the dash board started making noise. Well, I had to take it in 3 times, so I bitched and complained all the way to corporate. Well, the next time I went in for a different problem they had my shit done in a snap.
If you don't like the service that you paid for then just hit up the manager. A simple 5 minute conversation will go a long ways. If not, please hold sign that reads SUCKER. |
