Saw Break From Society at Coyote Wells last night. Those cats are really good. It's funny 'cause a friend of mine and me were talking about all these bands that go play Coyote Wells with all their equipment (stacks of amps, their own PAs, multiple guitars per player and all that shit) and they still suck. BFS rolled up with a few small combo amps and a keyboard playing a casio sitting on top of a bass amp and kick ass all over the bands I've seen at Coyote Wells. The drummer was especially good. He wasn't fancy or anything, but there's a lot of fools out there who tink they can play reggae drums and can't. He was on the right beats (the 2 and 4, as opposed to the 1-3 like rock drummers, or is it the other way around?) and kept it all together. Vocals were alittle ragged and buried in the mix, but the singer was a good frontman and entertaining. Bass playing and keyboard playing was all solid.
It's too bad Rasta Joe, the 14-year-old trumpet player, couldn't attend. Heard from the door man that the cops showed up to Coyote Wells at 8 p.m. to tell the owner he heard BFS had a 14-year-old member. That would suck if the cops used the newspaper article in the IV Press to rain on that kid's parade (it mentions his name and age). Oh, well.
It was a good show. Check them out if you can. |
