It seems as if there's been a dry spell in the Mexicali taco industry lately. All the taco shops that used to be good are no longer worth eating at and the search for the new best taco shop has begun.

Recently when I've gone to Mexicali to eat tacos, I've started to make the effort of trying out new ones. Of course, I take warning and avoid any that might appear to cause devastating intestinal damage during my sleep. Unfortunately, these that I avoid might end up being goldmines.

I hadn't been very successful in finding a replacement to the Ocotlan of old, but my dad actually handed me a business card to a taco shop in Mexicali that he recommended. La Carreta de "Lichi" is a taco shop from Culiacan, Sinaloa which serves a variety of items apart from your standard taco. I decided to go last night.

Located on Blvd. Venustiana Carranza* y Rio San Fernando #1993, La Carreta de "Lichi" offers the following items:

- Papas Sincronizadas (MX$70)
- Brochetas (MX$70)
- Cabrerias (MX$?)
- Pelliscadas (MX$20)
- Tacos (MX$9)
- Quesadillas (MX$15)
- Vampiros (MX$14)
- Queso Fundido (MX$?)
- Chilacas (MX$20)

I tried a vampiro, pelliscada, chilaca and a taco. The meat is prepared a little different, but it's very good and they are very generous. Service is excellent.

My favorite has always been vampiros, but it's hard to find a good authentically prepared one in Mexicali. La Carretta de "Lichi" does a good job with them.

My favorite at this taco shop had to have been the chilacas. This was the first time I had tried them, so I was very curious as to what exactly a chilaca was. It's a larger and thicker tortilla with meat and chiles. I'll definitely continue to order this one.

I know there have to been tons of other great taco shops in Mexicali, so please share the ones that you've recently found.

i think that the best taco place in mexicali is asadero las brasas... they dont only specialize in tacos they sell quesos fundidos, carne en su jugo and parrilladas... the place has AC they sell really really cold beer... and they have a large variety of salsas... its located in avenida anahuac in front of jardines del lago... like 3 blocks down from comex

There's a taco stand right outside Jugos Bamoa in Justo Sierra. They are really good and they have all the good condiments to enjoy your tacos better. As far as how they'll treat your bowels, well I can't assure you the best but the tacos are really good.

I went to check out the Carreta de Lichi last night and they were pretty good, something new at least. I tried a Vampiro and a Chilaca. The vampiro was pretty good, cause I've always liked the taste of tostadas made out of tortillas. The Chilaca was pretty huge, I had a hard time finishing that one, I liked the tortillas, which I think are made there, cause they taste and are thick just like the ones they give when you go to eat Birria. I kindda had a feeling of being in Sinaloa with the Narco Corridos playing in their stereo.

As far as Las Brasas go, they're no different than any other taco place in mex, don't know what the big deal is, except that they have AC, which many others do now (Ocotlan, Acatlan, Ciclon, etc.).

Saritas: The best thing there are the sopes not the tacos.

I went to go eat at Ocotlan last night, and they're good again. Which must mean that Acatlan is terrible right now. So all you Ocotlan fans, its safe to go.

I also recently went to La Fiesta Del Taco, since I had been told that they were probably the best tacos in Mex, and they're ok. I probably won't be going back. The meat is bland, and so are the tortillas. There was just nothing special about the place.

Did you try the one that is like a huge quesadilla with carne asada, pastor, and tripa? I love that one without the tripa but it is something you can only have once in a while a blue moon if you don't want to have health problems.

I hit up Ocotlan this past week, since La Carreta de Lichi is closed for "semana santa," and they taste the same as always. Most noticeably, the cebollitas are not as good as before.

I think I've realized the fact that you could add so many condiments to your taco is what made Ocotlan so special in the past. Their chunky salsa with tomatoes, avocados and chile is the best. These condiments, sans the taco, are a meal all in themselves.
