If you've recently driven around some of the major streets in Mexicali, primarily Blvd. Justo Sierra, you may have noticed a new trend in fast food or comida corrida: Paella.

This famous Spanish dish, which originated from Valencia, has the base ingredients of rice seasoned with saffron. The other supplementary ingredients vary as it could include seafood, beef, pork or even vegetables alone. This dish could be considered the equivalent to Chinese fried rice or arroz frito. It is very easy to make at home as well.

I've only eaten paella in Mexicali at Tatoro and it was very good. The dish alone was approximately $8 and served two. I enjoyed the meal and would recommend it to anyone who is willing to try an alternative to tacos or hot dogs.

I haven't had the chance to stop and eat at one of the carts located on Justo Sierra, but it may be something I end up doing the next evening I go out to eat in Mexicali. I'm glad to see that people are willing to start offering the area a variety of dining options, even if the real reason behind it is probably just to make money.

Mexicali, food-wise, is finally becoming the major city it should be.

Paella is yummy.
Whenever anyone is in San Francisco, check out Zarzuela for delicious and affordable paella and tapas.

Since I was a little kid I remember passing by a house in Pueblo Nuevo on the corner of calle 3era and that one way street that goes from Centro Civico to Calle 11 that had a sign that read "Se Vende Paella". Since I was small I had no idea what Paella was, therefore never tried it. I'll pass by there this weekend and let you guys know if they still make it.

You may also notice a sign that reads "Rica Paella" in Villafontana but I haven't been there for it's a household that sells it.

At least four times I have been wanting to catch up this paella stand on Justo Sierra but it's never there when I want to hit it. It looks like it's not everyday there and probably moves from place to place gradually.
