| Is everyone here happy with what they're doing for a living or their life in general? Just curious cause It seems as if I'm just wasting my life coming to this shitty job from Monday-Friday 8am-5pm and sit in this stupid little cubicle and wait for my first break to come, then lunch time, then the afternoon break, then time to go home. I'm sure there's more to life than just coming to work and wait anxiously for the weekend or the next holiday. Anybody else feel this way? I get paid ok (imperial valley standards), but sometimes I feel as if I would be much happier in another job even if I was paid less money. More money doesn't always equal more happiness. |

It all depends. People that live an independent life or better yet, have a family to support, have to work whether they like their job or not. This does not necessarily mean that all there is to life is work. It just means that work is an important part of life. I work for the City of Calexico at the water plant 7 nights a week from 6PM to 6AM (I'm off for 7 days afterwards). Believe it or not, being there for 12 hours at night alone can get pretty boring; sometimes kind of deppressing. Most of the time, I can't wait to finish the week and take my 7 days off. It is not the best job in the world but then I start to think that the job pays OK, it's what I went to school for, and before I had this I was a broke ass unemployed IVC graduate for some months. It really just depends on how you see yourself, how much you are satisfied with your current condition, and what you see of your life in general. And by the way, no job is a "waste of your life". Feel priviliged that you have a job since jobs don't grow on trees, especially here in the valley. |

I know how both of you feel. It's pretty easy to allow your job to envelope your life to the point where it almost becomes your identity. But, whether or not you are wasting your life is relative. It's all in how you perceive it.
At my previous job, I would regularly give up my evenings, weekends and holidays for the good of the company. Gotta meet those deadlines, you know? Code doesn't write itself. Twelve, 16, even 20 hour workdays were normal for me. I practically lived at the office. Practically lived at the office in the, "Hey, you spend a lot of time here, we're buying you a futon," sense.
My reason for doing so? "Beats wasting my time watching TV at home, at least I'm being productive."
Sucker.
Every once in a while, though, usually around the time when our second shift would have gone home, had we had a second shift, I'd snap out of automaton-mode and I would contemplate what I was doing with my life. The thought that most often crossed my mind was, "My life sucks, but the money is good." Well, it doesn't take a philosophy degree to realize that such is not the right order of things.
So, time went on, and one day, right before Christmas, I was slaving away at the office at 2:00 AM, when I decided to take a break. I walked over to one of our video editing stations and found a copy of Braveheart in the VCR. I watched the film for the very first time that morning. The next day, I turned in my resignation -- effective immediately.
"FREEDOM!"
Since then, I have made every effort possible to not sacrifice my personal life for my job. I simply do my job to the best of my abilities, and I get the Hell out of Dodge once the clock strikes 5:00 PM -- and I don't give my job another thought until the next morning as I'm walking in the door.
Do I live my life to the fullest now? No, not really. Hardly, actually. But in the grand scheme of things, I think I'm better off because of it.
Results may vary.
Of course, if it's basic advice you're after, then this is what I have to offer: view your job as a necessary evil; something you have to do in order get the money you need to partake in, or obtain the things, that are important to you and your life. |

Work sucks, and I too hate my job. I used to always wonder why my dad always wanted to win the lottery so badly. Everyday, he would go out and buy a lottery ticket. Two when it was over 20 mil, now I understand.
But really thinking about it, I remember back when I was in High School. I never did anything. And summer was always over so quickly. I never took advantage of all the free time that I had.
Now that I hardly have any free time, I cherish those few minutes I have alone, whether it's smoking a cigarette, watching t.v., or posting on Calecia.com, it's awesome.
Like revramrod said, "It's a necessary evil." Makes you cherish the good in the world.
I try not to think about it too much, makes me want to go out and buy lottery tickets. |

Just about everyone hates to work, but just about everyone has to work. Work is a necessity.
I haven't had every employment opportunity on the planet, but I'm quite confident that their isn't such a thing as the perfect job. I'm not going to believe anyone who tells me that they love their job because I'm pretty sure there have been horrible days when nothing appears to go right for them. No matter how "dynamic" your work environment may be, it will eventually become monotonous.
Hey, I "love" my job, but there are days when I just want to get the fuck out of there.
I also won't believe anyone who says that they would rather just travel the world for the rest of their life. I can almost guarantee you that shit will eventually get pretty boring.
Work helps you to grow. |

There's a reason they call it work.
I had a decent job that didn't pay much, but didn't really challenge me much either. Now, I'm unemployed and wish I had my low paying, unchallenging job back. |
