All this politician bashing got me to thinking about political parties. It seems to me that the best thing that could happen for American democracy would be to eliminate any party affiliation. We shouldn't allow politicians to represent any one party; they should only run on their own ideas. That way we don't get politicians that overtly cater to special interest groups.

We should also cap how much money a politician should be allowed to spend in a campaign; that would allow the average joe run for political office. After all, our government is supposed to be made up "of the people, for the people".

I agree, does anyone remember if Bush had any issues last time around? I think he "won" on the Republican ticket alone. Well... that and Daddy.

I'm not really too sure about this. What would the cap be? 20 bucks? Most average joe's don't have enough money to run for local office, let alone the presidency.

What needs to happen is true unbiased news reporting. I think the closest thing we have is The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. And that's only because they make fun of everybody, no exceptions.

Let's say we start off with "regional" elections in every county in the state. The only campaigning allowed would be "door to door" campaigning and one debate on local television, the night before the elections, which would be free of charge to the candidates. Then the winners of those elections meet at the state capital for a state televised debate, before a "state election".

In a presidential campaign the Democratic and Republican nominees are eligible for $75 million in public financing. The winners of the state elections, all 50 of them, get to split the $75 mil evenly for their presidential campaigns.

I was just thinking about this at lunchtime but didn't know how to word it. I've heard that most mexicans are a certain party, either Democrats or Republicans, but I can't remember which. Can anyone tell me what the difference between a Democrat and a Republican is? What are their beliefs, rules, etc...

Since I started looking into politics a few years ago, I saw a huge resemblance between political parties and street gangs. They both lie, cheat, steal and protect their own regardless of the effect it has on society. I find it sad how a politician chooses someone of their own party for a certain job, even if they are not the best fit for that position.

I agree with Bemisnorris that there should be no political parties, because it seems that the best man doesn't always win, it's the political party that wins.

I can understand why someone would be a member of the Republican or Democratic party, but why would anyone be a member of the Green party?

Do you have any idea how long this process would take? The campaigning and elections for the next presidential election would have to begin the day after the current presidential candidate was inaugurated.

Come on, man, use some logic. Maybe, I should have clarified it a bit. The national election would be one month after the state elections. The state elections would be two weeks after the regionals. People running for the regionals would be allowed to start campaigning no earlier than 30 days prior to the regional elections.

So there would be 50 presidential candidates? So it would end up working out to who had the bigger state?

It's hard enough to hear all the issues from two different candidates.

I'm not saying that my way is not without its flaws. The point I'm making is that the way presidential elections are now needs to be changed.
