I'm having problems with this coworker. I've been working at my job for 7 months now and I have this coworker who is a total ass. I recognize that he has been working in this for 20 years and I totally respect the fact that he is more experienced than me (therefore taking advantage of this fact). This guy swears he can boss anyone around, thinks he is the only one that can do anything right, and looks for any stupid detail that I do wrong so he can go and rat me out with the supervisor (and adding more than what actually happened). I pretty much know what I need to do about this situation, but since I'm pretty sure that most of you have had this problem, a little input from some of you would not hurt and would be appreciated.

I also had this problem with a co-worker who was making my life hell for a few months, but the difference was that it was a female. This one girl liked me since I first started working there and she would hit on me the whole time. Once she even asked the supervisor if I could come in on a saturday to help her do something, and since we were the only ones in the office, she started hugging me and she would'nt let me get out, till I finally pushed her out of the way and left. After a while I completely stopped talking to her and she would make comments to other people about me, she would go into my email account, she started rumoring that I was gay, she would listen in on my personal phone calls and she would tell everyone what I would talk about, etc... It was a total hell for about 5-6 months until she made a comment about me to somebody she was talking to on the phone, and I decided I wasn't gonna take this anymore and I wrote the Director and Asst. Director an E-mail telling them about this problem. They talked to her about this and of course she totally denied this and tried to make me look like the bad person, but luckily her "friends" from the office were on my side, and they told the Director that everything I had said was true. The following day her brother walked in to the office to see who I was to supposedly intimidate me. Since that day, everything has been so different, she has stopped doing what she was doing before, and I stopped dreading going to work every morning. I now wished that I had ratted on her before. Maybe that's what you should do, even though I hated having to rat on somebody, I now realized that it was the best thing to do. What pissed me off and frustrated me the most was that she was a female, and I couldn't do shit to her. I did scratch her car though, which did make me feel a little better.

At one of my old jobs, I had a supervisor that made my workday a living hell. No matter what I did or how hard I tried, my work was never good enough for her. Even when I would do my work exactly the way she wanted me to, she would say that I wasn't doing my job. It got to the point where I asked our union president for some advice, and she recommended that I wait it out until I was passed my probationary period, which is one year, and then go to my supervisor's boss. At the end of my first year this bitch supervisor gave me a horrible job evaluation, so then I was afraid of complaining about her treatment of me, thinking that everyone would think that I was just trying to get back because of my evaluation, so I put up with it for about 4 more months. One day when my supervisor came to complain to me about something I did, I told her that I done it exactly how she told me to. She then yelled at me saying that there was no way that she told me to do it that way; that day I went to her boss. He set up a meeting between the three of us and some representatives from the union and his boss. We discussed and argued the situation for over two hours, and when all was said and done, nothing changed! Eventually, my supervisor left for another job, but by then I had lost any respect or trust for the organization I worked in, and found another job myself.

Unfortunately, most of the time, you have to kind of wait it out to see if the situation goes away on its own.

Since supervisors have the right to fire you for just about anything, it's always best to wait until you're probationary period is over. If you have a probationary period, and it's not too far away, you should definitely wait it out.

Another trick, it's always harder to notice that people do things sub par if you like them. You end up justifying their actions. So, if this person that is giving you trouble doesn't seem like that bad of a person, then maybe you should form some kind of friendship. It's always worked for me in the past.

Well it kind of sucks since my probationary period doesn't end until like 2 more months. People have told me to just tell him off when my probationary period is over, but I've been putting up with this for 7 months. I guess I could wait 2 more months but I'll see how much farther this goes.

Telling off your supervisor, now or after your probationary period, won't help at all. Trust me, I've been there and done that. Even if your supervisor's supervisors sound like they're on your side, they really aren't; alone they'll tell you what you want to hear, but when you and your supervisor are both in front of them, they'll make it known that you are the peon.

One thing that I've done is invite my supervisor to a party and once everyone has had a few drinks I tell him off. Then everyone can tell him that I'm drunk and that I don't mean it. Little does he know that I'm sober as can be. Then a friend and I go outside and pee all over his little ass car, including the door handle. Man, does that make me feel better. If I'm feeling good I'll break an empty beer bottle on his head.

You think I'm full of shit, but everything I've said, excluding the breaking the bottle on his head, is true.
